UK Visa for Indian Passport Holders Living in the UAE

Yes, an Indian passport holder living in the UAE can apply for a UK Standard Visitor visa from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and you do not need to go back to India to do it. The visa costs £135 for a stay of up to 6 months, you give biometrics at a VFS Global centre in the UAE, and UKVI says a decision usually arrives within 3 weeks. The one extra thing your file must carry is proof of your UAE residence, because you are applying outside your country of nationality.

Do Indian passport holders in the UAE need a visa for the UK?

Yes. The GOV.UK visa checker gives one answer for an Indian national visiting for tourism: you will need a visa to come to the UK, apply for a Standard Visitor visa. Your UAE residence visa changes where you apply, not whether you apply.

The Standard Visitor visa covers tourism, visiting family and friends, short business trips and courses of up to 6 months. You can usually stay for up to 6 months on each visit. It does not let you work for a UK company, claim public funds or live in the UK through repeated visits.

If you fly to London several times a year, the long-term Standard Visitor visa runs for 2, 5 or 10 years at £506, £903 and £1,128 respectively. Each visit is still capped at 6 months, and UKVI can grant a shorter visa than the one you paid for without a refund.

Can you apply from the UAE rather than India?

Yes, and applying from the country where you live and work is the stronger option. Your ties are here: your job, your tenancy, your bank account and your residence visa. A file built around UAE evidence is easier for a caseworker to read than one that mixes Indian documents with a Dubai address.

GOV.UK's supporting documents guide asks for confirmation of legal residence if you are not a national of the country in which you are applying. For an Indian passport holder in Dubai, that means your UAE residence visa page and Emirates ID, both valid on the date you apply. A residence visa close to expiry will raise questions about whether you are settled here, so renew it first if you can.

Your biometrics appointment must be in the UAE too. The UK visa application centres run by VFS Global are at Wafi Mall in Dubai and The Mall at the World Trade Centre in Abu Dhabi. Residents of Sharjah, Ajman and the northern emirates use the Dubai centre.

How do you apply for the UK Standard Visitor visa from Dubai?

You apply online on GOV.UK, pay £135, then book and attend a biometrics appointment. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel, so for a December trip to London your form can go in from September.

The online form asks for your travel dates, where you will stay, what the trip will cost, your current home address and how long you have lived there, your parents' names and dates of birth, and your annual income. Depending on your answers it may also ask for 10 years of travel history, your employer's address and phone number, the name and address of anyone paying for the trip, and the passport details of any family in the UK. Have your old passports open before you start, because dates and visa numbers must match what you type.

Each family member needs their own application, their own fee and their own appointment, although you can complete the forms for your spouse and children. VisaWadi's United Kingdom visa assistance handles this whole stage for UAE residents: we check every document against the GOV.UK guidance, prepare the file, book the VFS Global slot and track the application until UKVI emails the decision.

What happens at the VFS Global biometrics appointment?

You prove your identity with your passport, have your fingerprints and photo taken, and hand over the supporting documents. GOV.UK confirms you get your passport back on the same day, though the centre may keep some other documents while the application is processed.

Bring the appointment confirmation, your Indian passport, and your UAE residence documents. If you are unsure what the room looks like or how long it takes, our walkthrough of the UK visa biometrics appointment in Dubai covers it step by step.

VFS Global charges its own service fee for the appointment, separate from the UKVI visa fee. That fee is set by VFS and shown when you book, so confirm the current amount on the booking screen rather than relying on a figure from an older forum post.

How long does the UK visa take for UAE-based Indian applicants?

Three weeks is the published standard. UKVI's processing times page lists the Standard Visitor visa at 3 weeks, and the clock starts on the day you attend your biometrics appointment, not the day you submit the form online. The weeks count on the UK working week, so UK public holidays are included but UAE holidays are not.

If your travel date is close, the priority service costs £500 on top of the visa fee for a decision in around 5 working days, and the super priority service costs £1,000 for a decision by the end of the next working day. Both can take longer if UKVI needs to check something, and the fee is not usually refunded when that happens. We weigh up when this makes sense in our guide to the UK visa priority service from the UAE.

The decision comes by email. If you need to cancel after submitting, GOV.UK says the fee is refunded only if the application has not been processed yet, so decide on dates before you pay.

What financial documents do Indian applicants in the UAE need?

Enough to show the trip is affordable from money you already hold, without a threshold to hit. Appendix V of the Immigration Rules requires sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs of the visit, including the return journey, without working or accessing public funds. There is no minimum balance written into the rules.

The GOV.UK guide asks for bank statements which detail the origin of the funds held and proof of earnings such as an employer letter with your start date, salary, role and company contact details. Use your UAE salary account, and make sure the salary credits match the figure in the employer letter. Statements or letters issued more than a year before the application are listed as less useful evidence.

If a relative in the UK or your employer is paying, Appendix V says the sponsor must have a genuine professional or personal relationship with you and be able to support you for the whole stay. Our post on UK Standard Visitor visa financial requirements goes deeper on what a caseworker reads into a statement, and our guide to the UK visitor visa sponsorship letter covers the sponsor side.

Why do UK visa applications from Indian nationals in the UAE get refused?

Almost every refusal comes back to the genuine visitor test in Appendix V. The caseworker must be satisfied that you will leave the UK at the end of the visit, will not live in the UK through frequent or successive visits, and have sufficient funds. The avoidable causes are all in the file, not in your nationality.

  • No proof of UAE residence. Applying from Dubai without a valid residence visa and Emirates ID in the file leaves the caseworker unsure where your life is based.
  • Salary and statements that do not match. An employer letter quoting AED 12,000 with statements showing AED 7,000 credits reads as unreliable evidence.
  • Large unexplained deposits. GOV.UK wants statements that show the origin of funds. A lump sum landing two weeks before the application, with no explanation, undermines the balance rather than helping it.
  • A residence visa about to expire, or a job in probation. Both weaken the argument that you will return to the UAE after the trip.
  • Padding the file with weak evidence. GOV.UK's list of documents that are less useful as evidence includes hotel bookings, flight bookings unless transiting, credit card statements and photocopies.
  • Undeclared previous refusals. The form asks about immigration history and UKVI checks it. Declare the earlier refusal and address it.

If you have already been refused, read our breakdown of UK visa refusal reasons for UAE residents before reapplying, because the same file resubmitted gets the same answer.

Embassy and visa-centre fees are passed through at cost. The VisaWadi fee is for the work on your file, and it is the same whether UKVI grants or refuses.

One honest note on the flight reservation row: GOV.UK lists flight bookings as less useful evidence for a UK visit visa, so do not buy one to pad the file. It is useful for holding dates while you wait for the decision.

Yes. You apply online on GOV.UK and give biometrics at the VFS Global centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Because you are applying outside India, the GOV.UK supporting documents guide asks for confirmation of legal residence, so include your valid UAE residence visa and Emirates ID in the file.
The Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for a stay of up to 6 months, paid to UKVI. Long-term visas cost £506 for 2 years, £903 for 5 years and £1,128 for 10 years. VFS Global charges a separate service fee at booking, and VisaWadi's assistance packages start at AED 699.
UKVI publishes 3 weeks for the Standard Visitor visa, counted from the day you give biometrics at the visa application centre, on the UK working week. The priority service costs £500 for a decision in around 5 working days, and super priority costs £1,000 for a decision by the next working day.
No. Appendix V of the Immigration Rules requires sufficient funds to cover all reasonable costs of the visit including the return journey, without a fixed figure. GOV.UK asks for bank statements that show the origin of the funds, so a steady UAE salary account beats a large deposit made just before applying.
Neither is required. GOV.UK lists flight bookings and hotel bookings among documents that are less useful as evidence for a visit visa, so do not buy them to strengthen the file. Travel insurance is sensible for medical costs in the UK, and Travl offers AXA-issued cover from AED 30.
