UK Visitor Visa Sponsorship Letter: What It Must Include
A UK visitor visa sponsorship letter must state who the sponsor is, their relationship to you, the dates of the visit, exactly what they are paying for (travel, accommodation, living costs) and that they are legally in the UK. Attach the sponsor's bank statements, proof of earnings, passport or residence permit and evidence of the relationship. Declare the sponsor on the online form too, or the support may be ignored.

A UK visitor visa sponsorship letter must state who the sponsor is, how they know you, exactly what they are paying for (travel, accommodation, day-to-day costs) and for which dates, and it must come with proof that the sponsor can afford it and is legally in the UK. Those five points are what UK Visas and Immigration asks for in its guide to supporting documents. A letter without the evidence behind it counts for very little.

Does a UK visitor visa need a sponsorship letter?
Only if someone else is paying for part of your trip or putting you up. The rules say you must be able to support yourself and your dependants during your trip, or have funding from someone else to support you, so a sponsor is optional rather than required.
If you can fund the whole trip from your own UAE salary and savings, you do not need a sponsor at all. Read our guide to the UK Standard Visitor visa financial requirements to check whether your own finances are enough.
If a relative or friend in the UK is covering accommodation or costs, you must say so and prove it. The online form asks for the name and address of anyone paying for your trip, and undeclared third party money is not counted in your favour.
What must a UK visitor visa sponsorship letter include?
The letter has to cover the five points in section 3 of the guide to supporting documents: what support is being provided and whether it extends to any dependent family, how it is being provided, that the sponsor has enough funds for themselves and their dependants, the relationship between you, and that the sponsor is legally in the UK.
Write it as a plain, factual letter rather than a plea. Here is a structure that hits every point.
1. Who the sponsor is
Full name, date of birth, nationality, UK address, phone number and email. State their immigration status in one line, for example British citizen, or holder of indefinite leave to remain, and name the residence document that proves it.
2. Who you are and how you know each other
Your full name, date of birth, passport number and UAE address. Then the relationship: sister, father, cousin, university friend of ten years. The caseworker guidance says decision makers may ask where and how you met and how often and by what method you communicate, so put those facts in the letter before they are asked.
3. Dates and purpose of the visit
Arrival and departure dates, and what the visit is for: a wedding, Eid with family, a graduation, a summer holiday. Keep it consistent with the dates you enter in the online form.
4. Exactly what is being paid for
This is the part most letters get wrong. Spell out whether the sponsor is providing accommodation only, accommodation plus meals and local travel, or the flights as well, and whether the support covers your spouse or children travelling with you.
If you are staying at their home, give the address and say who owns or rents it and how many bedrooms it has. If they are paying cash costs, give a figure and say how it will be paid, for example a bank transfer before travel or paid directly during the stay.
5. Confirmation of funds and status
One sentence confirming they can afford this without hardship and that supporting documents are attached. Then the signature, printed name and date. A scan of the signed original is fine, since the guide says digital images should be taken of original documents, not copies.
What documents should the sponsor attach to the letter?
The letter is a set of claims, and the attachments are the proof. Without them, the caseworker cannot check that the sponsor can and will provide support for the intended duration of your stay, which is what paragraph V 4.3 of Appendix V requires.
Attach the sponsor's bank statements and an employer letter or payslips. The guide asks for bank statements which detail the origin of the funds held, and it lists statements or letters issued more than a year before the application as less useful.
Attach a copy of the sponsor's passport photo page and, if they are not British, their residence document. The guide's example is a British passport or residence document.
Attach proof of the relationship. For family this is a birth certificate, marriage certificate or a family book, with a certified translation if it is not in English. For friends, a short history of the friendship with evidence of contact and any past visits does the job, since the guide lists personal photographs as less useful.
Attach proof of accommodation if you are staying with the sponsor, such as a tenancy agreement or mortgage statement in their name. Leave out the sponsor's utility bills and council tax bills, since the guide lists both as less useful.
How do you declare the sponsor in the online application?
Declare the sponsor in the form, not only in the letter. The application asks for the name, address and passport number of any family members you have in the UK, and for the name and address of anyone paying for your trip.
Undeclared support is the quickest way to have the letter ignored. The caseworker guidance says that if the applicant has not declared third party support on the form and cannot show the funds are their own, they should not be counted in any assessment.
Match every number. The trip cost you type into the form, the amount the sponsor says they will pay, and the balances on the statements should tell one consistent story.
Do you still need your own bank statements if a sponsor is paying?
Yes. The sponsor covers the money question, but the caseworker also assesses whether you are a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of the trip, and that assessment looks at your financial circumstances, family, social and economic background, and your ties to your country of residence.
For a UAE resident, that means your employer letter, your own statements, your residence visa and evidence of family or property here. A fully sponsored applicant with no visible life in the UAE looks like someone with nothing to come back to, however generous the sponsor.
Include your UAE residence visa every time. The guide asks for confirmation of legal residence if you are not a national of the country in which you are applying, which describes almost every expat in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah.
Where do you submit the sponsorship letter from the UAE?
You apply online, then upload or hand in the documents at a visa application centre. The government's own page confirms you must apply online before you travel and attend an appointment at a visa application centre, where your fingerprints and photo are taken.
In the UAE, VFS Global runs the UK visa application centres, with locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Your passport is returned the same day, and a decision usually follows within 3 weeks of the appointment.
The sponsor does not need to post anything to the UAE. A clear scan of the signed letter and the attachments, sent to you by email, is what you upload.
If you would rather not assemble all of this yourself, VisaWadi's United Kingdom visa assistance reviews the sponsor's letter and documents against the official supporting documents guide, prepares the file, books the VFS appointment and tracks the application to a decision. If your travel date is close, see whether the UK priority service is worth paying for.
Why do sponsored UK visitor visa applications get refused?
Sponsored applications fail on the sponsor's evidence, on the applicant's own ties, or on inconsistency. Each cause is avoidable.
- A letter with no proof behind it. The guidance allows a refusal where it is more likely than not that the third party will be unable to provide this support. A warm letter with no statements invites exactly that finding.
- A sponsor whose own finances look stretched. The sponsor must show enough for themselves and anyone normally dependent on them, as well as the applicant. A statement that dips near zero every month undermines the letter.
- Support not declared on the form. Money that appears in the letter but not in the application is disregarded, and the mismatch itself damages credibility.
- A sponsor with unclear status. If the sponsor is in the UK in breach of immigration law, the guidance says the support must be disregarded. A missing passport or permit copy leaves the caseworker guessing.
- A sponsor with a poor sponsoring history. Caseworkers check the third party's previous history of sponsoring visitors. If a previous guest overstayed, the letter needs to address it head on.
- Weak ties in the UAE. A sponsor cannot fix a thin file on your side. Applicants with short employment, no statements of their own and no family here get refused under the genuine visitor test.
- Relying on an undertaking instead of evidence. A letter from a British MP or any other third party promising you will comply with your visa is not proof of maintenance. The guidance says such undertakings should not be accepted as evidence of maintenance and accommodation.
If you have already been refused, our post on UK visa refusal reasons and how to reapply walks through reading the refusal notice and fixing the file before the second attempt.
What does a sponsored UK visitor visa cost from the UAE?
The government fee is the same whether or not you have a sponsor, and it is not refunded if the application is refused. VisaWadi's fee is separate and covers the work on your file.
