US Visa Photo Requirements: Exact Specs and Common Rejections
A US visa photo must be a colour, square image on a plain white or off-white background, taken within the last six months, with your head between 50% and 69% of the image height and no glasses. For the DS-160 upload it must be a JPEG between 600 x 600 and 1200 x 1200 pixels and 240 kB or less. A printed copy is exactly 2 x 2 inches.

A US visa photo must be a square, colour image on a plain white or off-white background, taken within the last six months, with your head filling 50% to 69% of the frame and no glasses. For the DS-160 you upload a JPEG of 600 x 600 to 1200 x 1200 pixels under 240 kB. Get one wrong and the upload fails or the officer asks for a new photo.

What are the exact US visa photo specifications?
The State Department's photo requirements page sets the baseline: the photo must be in colour, taken in full-face view directly facing the camera, with a neutral expression and both eyes open. Your head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches on a print, or 50% to 69% of the image's total height on a digital file.
The Photo Composition Template adds an eye-line rule that most studios in Dubai ignore. Your eyes must sit between 56% and 69% of the image height on a digital file, or 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 inches (28 to 35 mm) from the bottom of a printed photo.
For the upload itself, the Digital Image Requirements are strict: a square JPEG in 24-bit sRGB colour, at least 600 x 600 pixels and no more than 1200 x 1200, weighing 240 kB or less. If you scan an existing 2 x 2 inch print, scan it at 300 pixels per inch.
Do UAE residents upload the photo or bring a print?
Both, to be safe. The DS-160 instructs you to upload your digital image while completing the form, and the same page notes that some embassies and consulates require applicants to bring one printed photo to the interview.
One thing to know before you plan an interview in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The US Mission to the UAE states that routine visa processing is not available in the United Arab Emirates at this time, and that nonimmigrant applicants should schedule interviews in their country of residence or nationality. The same notice explains that Presidential Proclamation 10998 suspends or limits visa issuance to nationals of 39 countries from 1 January 2026, so check whether your nationality is affected before paying the fee.
If your DS-160 confirmation page shows an X where your photo should be, the upload failed. The State Department FAQ tells you to bring one printed photo meeting the requirements along with the confirmation page, so print two and keep them in your file. Our guide to DS-160 mistakes covers the other confirmation page errors.

Why do US visa photos get rejected?
Glasses are the most common reason. Since 1 November 2016, eyeglasses are not allowed in new visa photos, and sunglasses or tinted lenses are never accepted for a visa. The only exception is a medical reason backed by a signed statement from a medical professional, and even then the frames must not cover the eyes and there must be no glare.
Head coverings come next. A hat or scarf that hides the hair or hairline is rejected unless it is worn daily for a religious purpose, and even then your full face must be visible with no shadow cast on it. Headphones and wireless hands-free devices are not acceptable, though a hearing device you normally wear is fine.
Then there are the file problems. Photos copied from an Emirates ID, driving licence or passport are not acceptable, nor are snapshots, low-quality vending machine or mobile phone photos, or full-length shots. Profile shots, out-of-focus images, squinting and unusual expressions are all listed as grounds for rejection, and any digital enhancement that changes your appearance is banned, including editing out red-eye.
Can you take the US visa photo yourself in the UAE?
Yes, but a studio is the safer choice. The State Department recommends a professional visa photo service and warns that most webcams and mobile phones cannot produce sufficient quality. If you do it yourself, use a plain white wall, even light with no shadows, a camera rather than a phone, and everyday clothing.
Once you have the image, run it through the State Department's free photo tool, which crops to exactly 600 x 600 pixels. The tool crops only; it does not check quality, and a State Department employee makes the final call on whether your photo is acceptable.
For children, the child must be the only person in the frame, with eyes open and looking at the camera. Lay a baby on a white sheet or cover a car seat with one, and keep a parent's hands out of the shot. If your appearance has changed through surgery, large piercings or tattoos, or major weight change, take a new photo even if the old one is under six months old.
A rejected photo costs you a return trip and sometimes a rescheduled slot. VisaWadi's United States visa assistance checks the photo against every spec above, along with your DS-160, bank statements and supporting file, before anything is submitted.
