Where do you apply for a Spain visa in the UAE?

You apply at the BLS UAE Visa Application Centre in Dubai, not at the embassy. The embassy's own instructions say applications "must be submitted in person at the BLS UAE Visa Application Centre in Dubai (not at BLS premises in Abu Dhabi)". The embassy in Abu Dhabi examines the file and makes the decision.

The Schengen visa page sets out who can apply there: third-country nationals residing in the consular district who are travelling to Spain as their only or main destination. If Spain is not your main destination, apply through the country where you will spend the most nights instead. Our guide to the main destination rule explains how to work that out.

Residence matters more than nationality at this step. The process is for expats holding a UAE residence visa, whatever passport they carry. If you are in the UAE on a visit visa, you are not resident in the consular district and should apply from your home country.

When should you book your BLS appointment for Spain?

Book as soon as your travel dates are fixed, and no later than 15 days before departure. The embassy states that visa applications "must be submitted between 6 months and 15 days before the scheduled date of travel", and the European Commission repeats the same window for every Schengen state.

The 15-day minimum is a legal floor, not a target. The consulate has 15 calendar days to decide, and that period "may be extended to 45 calendar days if an interview or additional documents are requested". Submitting 6 to 8 weeks before travel gives you room for an extension or a request for extra documents.

Appointment availability is the other constraint. BLS controls the calendar, and demand rises before school holidays, Eid and the summer, so treat the date you can actually get as your real deadline.

How do you book the Spain visa appointment through BLS?

You book on the BLS Spain visa portal for the UAE, which the embassy's contact page links to and lists with the BLS phone number +971 4 387 5660. The embassy notes that BLS handles all short-stay visas by prior appointment. There is no separate embassy appointment for a tourist or visit visa.

In outline, you register on the portal, choose the Dubai centre and the Schengen visa category, pick a date and time, and save the confirmation. Each traveller needs their own slot, including children, because each applicant completes their own form and biometrics are captured per applicant. The embassy exempts applicants under 12, and anyone fingerprinted in the last 59 months, from fingerprint taking.

If the calendar shows nothing, check again at different times of day rather than paying a third party for a "guaranteed" slot. VisaWadi's Spain visa assistance includes the appointment booking, so our team monitors the calendar for you and matches the slot to your travel date and the 15-day rule.

What happens at the BLS centre in Dubai on the day?

You submit the file in person, give your biometrics and pay the fees. The embassy page states that "the applicant's facial image and fingerprints will be captured during the visa application procedure", which is why applications cannot be posted or submitted by a friend. Minors attend with a legal representative, who submits on their behalf.

Bring originals and photocopies in the order of the checklist. The embassy asks for the original passport and a photocopy of the biometric data pages, and it describes the photo specification in detail, so do not turn up with a studio photo against a dark background.

After submission you receive proof of receipt. The embassy states that BLS Dubai "will provide the applicant with proof of receipt of the application with a code that enables them to check the status of the dossier". Keep that code, because it is how you track the file.

How long does the Spain visa take after the BLS appointment?

Expect 15 calendar days, counted from the day after you submit. The Embassy of Spain says "the legal period for reaching a decision is of 15 calendar days as of the day after the application submission date, but this period may be extended to 45 calendar days".

The original passport is submitted with the file, so do not plan a second trip that needs it inside that window. The decision comes back as a visa in the passport, or as a written refusal.

A refusal always comes in writing with the grounds stated. The embassy page says applicants may appeal "within 1 month of the day following the date on which notification of the refusal is received", so keep the refusal letter and note the date you received it.

Why do Spain visa applications from the UAE get refused?

Refusals come from the file. The embassy treats an interview as the exception that extends the decision period, so the avoidable causes below all trace back to a document on the checklist.

  • Insurance that falls short. Cover under EUR 30,000, a policy that does not run for the whole trip, or one that excludes Schengen states. A Schengen-compliant policy from Travl, AXA-issued with EUR 30,000 medical cover and accepted by BLS, costs from AED 30, and our post on Schengen insurance minimums covers the wording to check.
  • Weak proof of financial means. Bank statements that show a large deposit just before the appointment, or no salary credits, leave the consulate unable to see how the trip is funded.
  • Applying through the wrong country. If your itinerary shows more nights in France than Spain, Spain is not your main destination and the Spanish consulate is not the one competent to examine your application.
  • Purpose of travel not evidenced. No flight reservation, no accommodation for every night, or dates that do not match the form. A flight reservation from Dummy Ticket 365 with a real PNR, delivered by email in minutes, covers the onward travel part without paying for a ticket before the decision.
  • Passport problems. Less than 3 months' validity beyond the departure date, or missing the photocopy of the biometric page.
  • Residence status not shown. An expired UAE residence visa, or a visit visa holder applying as if resident, fails the "proof of residence in the consular district" line.

A refusal is not a ban. You can reapply with a corrected file, and a clear cover letter explaining what changed helps the case officer see the difference.

What does a Spain visa appointment in Dubai cost?

The government fee is EUR 90 per adult, and the rest depends on what help you take and which documents you need to source. The table splits VisaWadi's service fee from the official fees, which are passed through at cost and never marked up.

One note on the fee figure. The embassy's Schengen page still shows the pre-June 2024 amount of EUR 80, while the European Commission confirms the fee "has raised from EUR 80 to EUR 90 for adults" as of 11 June 2024, so budget for EUR 90.

If you would rather hand the whole thing over, VisaWadi's Spain visa service prepares the file against the embassy checklist, books the BLS Dubai slot and tracks the application until the passport is back. Our earlier guide to the BLS International process for Spain goes deeper on the document side.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The Embassy of Spain in the UAE states that applications must be submitted in person at the BLS UAE Visa Application Centre in Dubai, not at BLS premises in Abu Dhabi, and that an appointment is necessary. The embassy in Abu Dhabi examines the file and issues the decision, but it does not accept the application itself.
Up to 6 months before your travel date, and no later than 15 days before it. That window comes from the Embassy of Spain's Schengen visa page and matches the EU-wide rule. Aim for 6 to 8 weeks before departure so a 45 day extension of the decision period does not clash with your flight.
EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, according to the European Commission, with children aged 5 and under exempt. BLS charges its own service fee on top, and VisaWadi passes both through at cost. The embassy's page still shows the older EUR 80 figure, so budget for EUR 90.
15 calendar days, counted from the day after submission, is the legal decision period stated by the Embassy of Spain. It can be extended to 45 calendar days if an interview or additional documents are requested. The original passport is submitted with the file, and the tracking code from BLS lets you follow the file's status.
Yes. Each applicant, including a child, has a separate application, and the embassy captures a facial image for everyone and fingerprints for applicants aged 12 and over. A minor's application is submitted by a legal representative and one parent must sign the form, so book a slot per traveller and attend together.
