How does BLS International work for Spain visa applicants in the UAE?

BLS International is the appointed visa application centre for the Spanish consulate in the UAE. It collects your application, processes biometrics (fingerprints and a photograph), and forwards the complete file to the consulate for a decision. BLS does not make the visa decision itself; the Spanish consulate does.

BLS centres in the UAE operate in Dubai and Abu Dhabi . You must book an appointment online through the BLS portal before visiting.

Walk-ins are not accepted. On the day, BLS staff check that your file is complete before scanning and forwarding it, so a disorganised or incomplete file can be rejected at the counter.

How do you book a BLS appointment for a Spain visa?

Appointments are booked through the BLS International online portal for Spain. You select your centre (Dubai or Abu Dhabi), choose an available slot, and pay the BLS service charge at the time of booking. Appointment slots can fill up weeks in advance during peak travel periods such as summer and Christmas, so book as early as the 90-day advance application window allows.

On the day of your appointment, arrive on time with your complete file in the order specified by BLS. Bring originals and copies of every document. BLS staff will take your biometrics and issue a receipt confirming your application reference number, which you can use to track your application status online.

What are the visa fees and BLS service charges?

FeeAmount
Schengen visa fee (adult, 12+)EUR 80 (payable in AED at the counter rate)
Schengen visa fee (child 6–11)EUR 40
Children under 6Exempt
BLS service chargeCharged separately at the centre; confirm the current rate on the BLS portal
VisaWadi assistanceFrom AED 299 (document review, file preparation, appointment booking)

The EUR 80 embassy fee is a pass-through cost set by the Spanish consulate under EU Schengen visa regulations. VisaWadi does not mark it up.

Do you need a flight reservation before your BLS appointment?

Yes. BLS requires proof of your intended travel dates, and the Spanish consulate expects a confirmed flight itinerary as part of the application file. You do not need to have purchased your tickets; a flight reservation with a real PNR code is acceptable at this stage.

Many UAE residents use a service such as Dummy Ticket 365, which issues a verified flight reservation with a genuine PNR, delivered by email in minutes. Prices start from USD 13 for two days' validity, USD 20 for seven days, and USD 23 for fourteen days. Read more about how these work in our guide to what a dummy ticket is and when you need one.

What travel insurance meets Spain Schengen requirements?

Spain and all Schengen countries require travel insurance with a minimum of EUR 30,000 medical cover, valid for the entire Schengen zone and for the full duration of your trip, as set out in Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 (the Schengen Visa Code). The policy must cover medical repatriation and emergency evacuation.

Travl offers AXA-issued Schengen travel insurance from AED 30, accepted by BLS International. The policy document forms part of your application file and must show the EUR 30,000 figure and the dates of coverage.

Which country should you apply through if visiting multiple Schengen states?

If Spain is your main destination (where you spend the most nights), apply through Spain via BLS. If you are spending an equal number of nights in two or more countries, apply through the country of your first entry into the Schengen zone. The rule comes from Article 5 of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009.

If Spain is not your main destination, applying through the Spanish consulate risks refusal on jurisdictional grounds. Our guide to which Schengen country to apply through covers the main destination rule in full.

Why do Spain Schengen visa applications get refused?

Refusals from the Spanish consulate follow patterns that are largely avoidable. The most common causes for UAE residents are:

  • Insufficient funds: Bank statements that do not show enough balance for the duration of the trip, or statements with sudden unexplained deposits just before application.
  • Incomplete file: Missing documents or documents that do not match the requirement (wrong photo size, unsigned form, insurance below EUR 30,000).
  • Weak ties to the UAE: Applicants without a stable employment record, a long-tenured residence visa, or property in the UAE may be seen as higher risk of overstaying.
  • Purpose not established: A vague cover letter, no hotel bookings, or an itinerary that does not match the dates on the flight reservation raises doubt about the genuineness of the visit.
  • Previous Schengen overstays or refusals: These appear in the Schengen Information System and will be scrutinised. Any previous immigration issue must be disclosed and explained.
  • Applying through the wrong consulate: If Spain is not the main destination but the application is filed there anyway, the consulate can reject it on jurisdiction grounds without assessing the merits.

Our post on UK visa refusal reasons covers overlapping themes around document credibility and ties to home that apply equally to Schengen decisions.

How long does Spain Schengen visa processing take from the UAE?

The Spanish consulate targets a decision within 15 calendar days of the date your complete application is received. In practice, processing can run longer during peak summer and school holiday periods.

Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before your planned travel date, and no earlier. The Schengen Visa Code sets the maximum advance application window at six months, so applying early during busy periods is the most reliable way to protect your travel dates.
