Spain Visa Refusal Reasons and How to Reapply

The Short Answer

A Spain visa refusal from the UAE can be appealed or reapplied for, and reapplying is the better route for document-based refusals. You may file a reconsideration appeal with the Spanish embassy within one month of notification, or submit a fresh application at BLS International with the ticked refusal ground fixed. A new application is decided within 15 calendar days, extendable to 45.

Spain Visa Refusal Reasons and How to Reapply

A Spain visa refusal from the UAE is fixable in nearly every case, and the refusal letter tells you which route to take. You can file a reconsideration appeal with the Spanish embassy within one month, or you can submit a fresh application at BLS International with the gap closed. Reapplying is the faster route for the common refusal grounds: unclear purpose, weak funds or doubt about your return.

What you need to reapply for a Spain visa

  • Your refusal letter, the standard Schengen form with the ticked ground, as issued by the Spanish embassy
  • A new signed Schengen visa application form, one per applicant
  • One recent colour passport photo on a light background, per the embassy photo rules
  • Passport valid 3 months beyond your departure from Schengen, with two blank pages, issued within the last 10 years (embassy requirement)
  • Travel medical insurance with at least EUR 30,000 cover for the whole stay and the whole Schengen area, such as AXA-issued cover from Travl from AED 30
  • Documents proving the purpose of the trip: hotel bookings, invitation or event registration, and a flight reservation such as one from Dummy Ticket 365
  • Proof of sufficient financial means, with bank statements that match your salary and the trip cost
  • Proof of your intention to return: NOC or leave letter, tenancy or Ejari, family ties in the UAE
  • Proof of residence in the consular district, meaning your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID
  • A cover letter that answers the refusal ground directly, plus any document that was missing the first time

Why was my Spain visa refused?

Your visa was refused on one or more of the numbered grounds printed on the standard Schengen refusal form, and the ticked box is your starting point. The Annex VI form lists grounds such as "justification for the purpose and conditions of the intended stay was not provided", "you have not provided proof of sufficient means of subsistence" and "proof of holding an adequate and valid travel medical insurance was not provided".

Two other grounds catch a large share of UAE applicants. "The information submitted regarding the justification for the purpose and conditions of the intended stay was not reliable" means the officer did not trust the story your documents told. "Your intention to leave the territory of the Member States before the expiry of the visa could not be ascertained" means your ties to the UAE looked thin.

The grounds themselves come from Article 32 of the EU Visa Code, which requires a refusal where the purpose and conditions of the stay are not justified, where sufficient means are not proven, or where the applicant is considered a threat to public policy, internal security or public health. The same article says the decision and its reasons must be notified on the standard form.

What does the Spanish embassy's refusal letter actually say?

The letter states the grounds, not the detail behind them. The Abu Dhabi embassy's page confirms that "visa refusals will always be notified in writing, setting forth the grounds on which the decision adopted was based", and the European Commission adds that you will be told why it was rejected and how to submit an appeal.

What you will not get is a line-by-line explanation of which bank statement or booking caused the doubt. Working that out is on you, or on whoever prepares your reapplication. The form itself says the person concerned "may appeal against the decision to refuse a visa as provided for in national law" and "must receive a copy of this document", so keep the original safe.

Read the ticked ground against the file you submitted. If ground 3 (means) was ticked and you sent three months of statements with a balance that dipped to near zero, the fix is obvious. If ground 9 (intention to leave) was ticked, the gap is in your employment and residence evidence, not your money.

Should I appeal or reapply for a Spain visa?

Reapply if the refusal was about missing or weak documents, and appeal only if the embassy got a fact wrong. An appeal asks the same consular office to look again at the same file, so it works when the decision rests on an error, such as insurance that was in the file but recorded as absent.

A fresh application lets you add everything that was missing and rewrite the cover letter around the ticked ground. It runs on the normal timeline of 15 calendar days from the day after submission, extendable to 45 calendar days if the embassy asks for an interview or more documents.

The embassy's page sets two time limits for appeals and one window for applications, and nothing else. The only dates that bind you are the one month for a reconsideration appeal, the two months for judicial review, and the rule that a new application must land between 6 months and 15 days before travel.

How do I appeal a Spain visa refusal from the UAE?

File a written appeal for reconsideration with the consular office that refused you, within one month of the day after you received the refusal. The Abu Dhabi embassy states this deadline and names itself as the office that handles it, and the EU Visa Code confirms that appeals follow the national law of the member state that took the decision.

Your appeal should identify the refusal, quote the ticked ground, and explain with evidence why that ground does not apply. Attach the documents that prove your point. A one-page letter that says "please reconsider" with no new argument will not move the decision.

If the reconsideration is dismissed, or if you skip it, a judicial review can be filed with the High Court of Justice of Madrid within two months of the day after notification. That is a court case in Spain and needs a Spanish lawyer, so it only makes sense where a great deal rides on the specific decision. For a holiday or a business trip, a stronger new application is the better use of the same two months.

How do I reapply for a Spain visa after a refusal?

Book a new appointment at the BLS Spain Visa Application Centre, submit a complete new file in person, and pay the fee again. The embassy's page states that applications go in person at the visa application centre or the consular office, that an appointment is required, and that only files containing the form, photo, valid passport and fee will be accepted at all.

Fix the ticked ground first, then check the rest of the file as if you had never applied. VisaWadi's Spain visa assistance starts with a read of the refusal letter against your original file, then rebuilds the documents, books the BLS slot and tracks the case to a decision. Packages start at AED 299 with the embassy and BLS charges passed through at cost.

Your appointment and submission steps are the same as a first application, covered in our guide to booking a Spain visa appointment through BLS in Dubai. If your fingerprints were taken in the last 59 months you are exempt from giving them again, unless the earlier scan was poor quality.

Once you submit, you receive a receipt with a code to track the file online. Use it rather than emailing the embassy, which slows the case rather than speeding it up.

Why do Spain visa applications from the UAE get refused?

Spain applications from the UAE fail for avoidable reasons far more often than for security grounds. Each of the causes below maps to a numbered ground on the refusal form, and each has a straightforward fix.

Purpose of the trip not proven (ground 2 or 8)

A hotel booking for five nights and a return flight are not enough on their own if your cover letter says you are visiting a friend in Valencia. Every document must tell one story: the same dates, the same cities, the same purpose. If the trip is a family visit, add the invitation and the host's residence proof; if it is business, add the letter from the Spanish company.

Financial means look insufficient or unexplained (ground 3)

The embassy requires documents showing sufficient financial means, and it reads the pattern, not just the closing balance. A large deposit the week before the appointment, with no salary history behind it, weakens the file. Show six months of salary credits, a salary certificate that matches them, and a balance that covers the trip with room to spare.

Doubt about returning to the UAE (ground 9)

This is the ground that hits new employees, freelancers and anyone whose residence visa is close to expiry. Evidence of ties fixes it: an NOC with your leave dates and return date, a tenancy contract, a residence visa with months left on it, and a spouse or children who stay in the UAE. If you changed jobs recently, read our post on applying for a Schengen visa during probation before you resubmit.

Insurance that does not meet the rule (ground 7)

The policy must cover repatriation, urgent healthcare and emergency hospital treatment, with cover of at least EUR 30,000 for the entire stay and throughout the Schengen area. A policy that names only Spain, or that starts a day after your flight, fails this test. AXA-issued cover from Travl is written to the Schengen wording and accepted by BLS.

Wrong consulate

Spain's consular office accepts applications from residents of its district travelling to Spain as their only or main destination. If you spend more nights in Portugal than in Spain, Spain is the wrong embassy, and the file will be refused or returned. Our guide to the main destination rule explains how to count the nights.

Passport and form errors

The passport must be valid for 3 months beyond your departure date, hold two blank pages and have been issued within the last 10 years. A form with an unsigned page, or a photo that does not meet the light-background rule, stops the file before an officer ever weighs the merits.

How much does a Spain visa cost after a refusal?

You pay the visa fee and the BLS charge again on a new application, and there is no discount for a second attempt. The table separates what VisaWadi charges from what goes to the embassy and the visa centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have one month from the day after you receive the refusal to file an appeal for reconsideration with the Spanish consular office that decided your case. A judicial review can also be filed with the High Court of Justice of Madrid within two months of notification or of the dismissal of the reconsideration appeal.
Yes. The Spanish embassy in Abu Dhabi publishes no waiting period after a refusal; the only timing rule is that an application must be submitted between 6 months and 15 days before travel. Reapply as soon as you have fixed the refusal ground and can submit a complete file at BLS International.
Yes. Every new Schengen application carries the full visa fee of EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged 6 to 11, plus any service charge at the visa application centre. The fee from the refused application is not refunded and is not credited to the new one.
A refusal does not bar you from applying again to Spain or to another Schengen state, and the Spanish embassy sets no waiting period beyond the normal application window. Mention the earlier refusal in your cover letter and fix the ticked ground, because a second file with the same weakness will draw the same result.
Refusals on grounds 2, 3 and 9 of the standard form dominate: purpose of stay not justified, insufficient proof of means, and intention to leave not established. Each traces back to documents that do not match the cover letter, thin bank statements, or weak proof of employment and residence in the UAE.
