Schengen Visa Travel Insurance Requirements: Minimum Cover Explained
You need travel insurance with a minimum of EUR 30,000 in medical cover per person, valid across all Schengen member states for the full duration of your trip. The policy must include emergency hospitalisation, repatriation, and death expenses. This requirement is set by Article 15 of EU Visa Code Regulation EC 810/2009 and applies to every Schengen consulate.

Every Schengen visa application filed from the UAE requires travel insurance with a minimum medical cover of EUR 30,000, valid across all Schengen member states for the full duration of your stay. This is not an optional add-on or a formality that embassies overlook. A policy that falls short on cover amount, geographic scope, or date range is one of the most common and most avoidable reasons a file gets rejected at the document check stage.
What is the minimum cover required for a Schengen visa?
The minimum is EUR 30,000 in medical cover per person, per trip. This figure comes directly from Article 15 of EU Visa Code Regulation EC 810/2009, which governs Schengen visa applications across all member states. The cover must include urgent medical treatment, emergency hospitalisation, and full repatriation to your home country.
The EUR 30,000 minimum applies regardless of which Schengen country you are visiting or which consulate processes your application. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Switzerland, and every other Schengen state all apply the same baseline requirement.
What does the Schengen insurance policy need to cover?
The EEAS Medical Travel Insurance requirements checklist sets out ten numbered requirements under Article 15 of the EU Visa Code. The policy must provide a minimum of EUR 30,000; cover urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment, and repatriation; extend to all Schengen member states; cover expenses connected with the death of the applicant; be reimbursable without a fee if the visa is refused; and include a minimum grace period of 15 days.
Items 9 and 10 on the form also address Covid-19 coverage requirements. A policy that covers only outpatient treatment, or that caps hospitalisation separately at a lower amount, does not meet the standard.
The policy must be valid across the entire Schengen area, not just the country you are applying through. If you are applying through Germany but plan to travel through Austria and Italy as well, the insurance must state coverage across all Schengen states. The German Embassy Abu Dhabi confirms this on its own health insurance declaration form, which requires cover across the entire Schengen area per person.
The dates on the policy must match or exceed the dates on your application. If your visa covers 10 days, the insurance must cover at least those 10 days. Many embassies prefer the policy to start the day you depart the UAE and end the day you return.

Does an insurance card count as proof of cover?
No. The VFS Global Greece-from-UAE checklist states explicitly that insurance cards are not accepted as proof of cover. You must submit a printed policy document or confirmation letter that clearly shows your name, the coverage period, the sum insured, the geographic scope, and the insurer's details.
The same standard applies at VFS Global centres handling Germany, France, Switzerland, and Spain applications. A card showing your membership number tells the visa officer nothing about the level of cover. Always request the full policy schedule from your insurer before your appointment.
Which insurers are accepted by VFS Global and BLS International?
VFS Global and BLS International do not publish an approved provider list, but they do check that the submitted policy document meets the EUR 30,000 minimum and explicitly states Schengen-area coverage. Any policy that does will be accepted, regardless of which insurer issued it.
For applicants in the UAE looking for a quick, affordable option, Schengen-compliant travel insurance from Travl is AXA-issued, starts from AED 30, and is accepted by both VFS Global and BLS International. The policy meets the EUR 30,000 medical cover requirement and includes emergency hospitalisation and repatriation cover, which are among the key points the visa officer checks.
It is not a VisaWadi product. You purchase it directly through Travl.
What do VFS Global checklists actually say about insurance?
The VFS Global Germany-from-UAE checklist requires that the travel insurance policy is valid for all Schengen countries for the entire duration of the visa, with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 including repatriation. The VFS Global Germany UAE one-pager lists travel insurance as a mandatory document and confirms it must be valid for all Schengen countries, matching what the checklist requires for UAE residents applying through VFS Global.
The VFS Global Greece checklist uses the same language and adds the specific warning that insurance cards are not acceptable. The Swiss Embassy UAE page via VFS Global similarly confirms that travel insurance covering all Schengen countries is a mandatory requirement for applicants in the UAE. The European Commission's official Schengen application page lists medical insurance covering emergency care, hospitalisation, and repatriation as a mandatory supporting document for every Schengen visa application.
Why do Schengen insurance submissions get rejected?
The most common reason is insufficient cover. Applicants sometimes purchase a general travel policy without checking whether the medical limit reaches EUR 30,000. Policies issued for other regions, or domestic health plans extended abroad, often fall short.
The second most common reason is incorrect dates. If your policy starts the day after your flight departs, or expires a day before you return, the visa officer will flag it. Always align the policy dates with your travel dates before submitting the file.
Geographic mismatch is the third frequent issue. A policy that states coverage in France only, or in the EU excluding the Schengen area as a defined zone, is not compliant. The document must reference the Schengen area or list all member states explicitly.
Submitting an insurance card instead of a policy document is also regularly cited as a rejection cause, particularly at VFS Global Greece and VFS Global Switzerland appointments. Print the full schedule, not just the card.
Does the insurance requirement change depending on which Schengen country you apply through?
The EUR 30,000 minimum is uniform across all Schengen states, set at EU level by the Visa Code. The German Consulate General Dubai information leaflet for UAE applicants reflects this same EUR 30,000 baseline, as do the French, Italian, Spanish, and Greek missions. You will not find a Schengen consulate that accepts a lower figure or waives the insurance requirement for UAE residents.
What can vary is how strictly individual visa officers scrutinise the document, and whether a specific mission requires an additional declaration form alongside the policy schedule.
Germany uses a specific health insurance declaration form for multiple-entry visa applicants. The German Embassy Abu Dhabi declaration form must be submitted together with the insurer's policy document. Check the checklist for your specific consulate before your appointment.
What about multi-entry visas and longer trips?
For a multi-entry Schengen visa, you need insurance that covers each individual trip within the visa's validity period. Buying a single-trip policy for your first journey and then travelling again on the same visa without insurance does not satisfy the requirement for subsequent entries.
Annual multi-trip policies are accepted for multi-entry applicants, provided they meet the EUR 30,000 minimum per trip and state Schengen-area coverage. If your annual policy renewal date falls mid-visa, keep both policy documents and carry them on every trip.
How does travel insurance fit into the broader Schengen application?
Insurance is one document in a larger file. The full package typically includes your passport, UAE residence visa copy, photographs, bank statements, employment letter, accommodation proof, and a flight itinerary.
For the flight reservation, many applicants use a verified dummy ticket with a real PNR rather than booking a non-refundable flight before the visa is approved. Dummy Ticket 365 issues reservations from USD 13 that are accepted at VFS Global and BLS International appointments.
If you want help putting the complete file together, VisaWadi's Schengen visa service covers document preparation, checklist review, appointment booking, and application tracking, with packages from AED 299. Applications are filed through VFS Global in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, or through BLS International for Spain. The service is available for applicants across the UAE regardless of nationality.
