Schengen Visa for Freelancers and Business Owners in the UAE
Yes, UAE freelancers and business owners can get a Schengen visa without an employer NOC. Consulates accept a copy of your valid UAE trade or professional licence instead, backed by stamped personal bank statements for the last three months and a company letter signed by someone other than you. The visa fee is EUR 90, processing takes 15 days, and you apply between 6 months and 15 days before travel.

Yes, freelancers and business owners in the UAE get Schengen visas, but the file is built differently from an employee's. There is no employer to write your NOC, so your trade licence, your own bank statements and a clear paper trail of what your business earns do the job instead. Get those three things right and the consulate treats you like any other applicant.

Can a freelancer or company owner in the UAE get a Schengen visa without an employer NOC?
Yes, and the consulates say so in their own checklists. The German missions list a sponsor letter for employees, then add "valid trade license copy for investor/partner of company" as the equivalent for owners (German Missions UAE). The Italian Consulate in Dubai asks for a "Copy of a valid UAE trade/professional license" on its tourism checklist (Italian Consulate Dubai).
Your nationality still shapes the outcome. Consulates weigh ties to the UAE more heavily for some passports than others, so if yours tends to draw closer scrutiny, the financial and business evidence below matters even more.
The one wrinkle is the NOC itself. Italy states that a company owner "would require a letter as well" and that the applicant "cannot sign the letter themselves" (Italian Consulate Dubai). Have a partner, manager or company secretary sign a letter confirming your role, and if you are a sole freelancer, explain that in your cover letter instead.
Which trade licence documents do Schengen consulates accept?
A copy of a valid licence with your name on it is the baseline, and some embassies want more. For Italy, "For owners, trade license must clearly report their name" (Italian Consulate Dubai). For Germany's business visa the requirement reads "Copy of the valid trade license of the UAE company" (German Missions UAE).
Portugal goes further. Its Abu Dhabi embassy checklist says the "Commercial Trade License is MANDATORY to be submitted original, authenticated and stamped by UAE MoFA along with NOC letter signed by the responsible(s) of the Company" (VFS Global Portugal UAE). Check the checklist for your destination before you assume a plain copy is enough.
Italy asks for a "trade/professional license", and that wording is broad enough to cover a free zone freelance permit (Italian Consulate Dubai). It helps to bring the permit itself and, if the permit does not show a clear expiry date, a letter from the free zone confirming it is valid.
How do you prove income when you have no salary slip?
Personal bank statements for the last three months carry the file. Germany asks for "personal bank statements of at least the last 3 months before application" (German Missions UAE), and Italy requires the "Last 3 months bank statements (foreign bank accounts will not be considered)" (Italian Consulate Dubai).
Company statements help, but only in the right hands. Italy states that "Company bank statements are accepted only when the applicant is company owner/partner as per trade license" (Italian Consulate Dubai), and the Italian Abu Dhabi checklist says a partner of a local company "has to provide his personal bank statements" (VFS Global Italy Abu Dhabi). Personal first, company second, never company alone.
Format matters too. Italy insists that a statement "should be on a bank letterhead" and that photocopies or online statements "must bear the original bank stamp" (Italian Consulate Dubai), and Portugal wants an "Originally signed and stamped personal UAE bank account statement for the last 3 months" (VFS Global Portugal UAE). Get the branch to stamp every page.
Irregular income is fine if it is explained. Add a short income summary to your cover letter naming your main clients, your average monthly receipts and any large one-off transfers, and Italy explicitly invites "Any other document that might help evaluate your financial situation in the UAE (i.e. other bank accounts, personal properties, investments, etc...)" (Italian Consulate Dubai).
Where do you apply, and how early?
Apply at the consulate or visa centre of the country where you will spend the longest, or the first country if the stays are equal (European Commission). Our guide to the main destination rule walks through the edge cases.
In the UAE that means VFS Global for France, Germany and Italy and BLS International for Spain. For Germany, "Applicants residing in Dubai and the Northern Emirates need to submit their applications at VFS Global in Dubai. Applicants residing in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain need to submit their applications at VFS Global in Abu Dhabi" (German Missions UAE).
Spain requires applications "in person at the Consular Office or, when available, at the Visa Application Centre", which is BLS (Embassy of Spain Abu Dhabi).
The window is fixed by EU rules: "at least 15 days before your intended journey and no earlier than 6 months beforehand" (European Commission). Italy adds that filing later than 15 days before travel "will result in the application to be returned" (Italian Consulate Dubai). Business owners who wait for a client to confirm a meeting date are the ones who get caught by this.
VisaWadi's Schengen visa assistance covers all of this for UAE residents, with the file prepared and checked before your VFS Global or BLS International appointment in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and packages from AED 299.
How long does a Schengen visa take for a self-employed applicant?
The same as anyone else on paper: "The normal processing time for a visa application is 15 days. This period may be extended to up to 45 days if a more detailed examination of the application and/or additional documents are required" (European Commission). Spain states the same 15 and 45 calendar day limits (Embassy of Spain Abu Dhabi).
Self-employed files are the ones that trigger the extension. An unclear licence, a company account with no matching personal account, or income that does not line up with the trip budget invites a request for more documents, and that resets your clock. A complete file on day one is the fastest route.
What should a business owner write in the cover letter?
Lead with who you are, what your company does and why the business keeps running while you are away. For a business trip Italy wants "Documents proving the existence of a business relation with the company in Italy such as (but not limited to) recent invoices or commercial agreements", and warns that "General statements such as 'business purposes' or 'start a business relation' will not be accepted" (Italian Consulate Dubai).
For a holiday the same logic applies. State your dates, your bookings, who is covering the company in your absence, and the fact that your licence, your lease and your clients are all in the UAE. That is the "evidence of your intention to return" the consulate is looking for (European Commission).
Our Schengen cover letter guide has a structure you can follow.
Why do Schengen applications from freelancers and business owners get refused?
Because the file leaves questions unanswered, not because of the job title. These are the avoidable causes that come up again and again.
- Self-signed NOC. Italy states that the applicant "cannot sign the letter themselves" (Italian Consulate Dubai). A letter you signed for yourself proves nothing.
- Company statements only. Consulates want your personal account, and accept the company account only as a supplement when the licence names you (Italian Consulate Dubai).
- Foreign bank accounts. Italy says "foreign bank accounts will not be considered" (Italian Consulate Dubai). Money in a home-country account does not count.
- Unstamped online statements. Printouts without a bank stamp fail the letterhead rule (Italian Consulate Dubai).
- Licence that does not name you. The Italian business checklist is explicit that the licence "must clearly report their name" (Italian Consulate Dubai).
- Vague business purpose. "Business purposes" with no invoice, contract or invitation is rejected on the Italian checklist (Italian Consulate Dubai).
- Short residence visa. Your UAE residence visa must be valid at least 90 days after your intended return (Italian Consulate Dubai). Renew it before you apply.
- Insurance below EUR 30,000 or missing repatriation. Both are stated minimums (German Missions UAE). AXA-issued cover from Travl meets them and starts from AED 30.
A refusal is always notified in writing with the grounds stated (Embassy of Spain Abu Dhabi), so read the letter and fix that specific point before you reapply.
What does a Schengen visa cost a UAE business owner?
Three separate lines: the government fee, the visa centre's own charge, and any help you pay for. The government fee is set by the EU at EUR 90 for adults (European Commission) and is paid in dirhams at the counter for Germany (German Missions UAE). Italy states the visa fee is non-refundable in any case (VFS Global Italy Abu Dhabi).
| Item | Who charges it | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen visa fee, adult | Consulate, paid at VFS Global or BLS International | EUR 90 (European Commission), collected in AED for Germany (German Missions UAE) |
| Visa centre service fee | VFS Global or BLS International | Charged by the centre and retained by it (German Missions UAE) |
| VisaWadi assistance | VisaWadi | Packages from AED 299 (Schengen visa service); embassy and centre fees passed through at cost |
| Travel medical insurance, EUR 30,000 cover | Travl, AXA-issued | From AED 30 (Travl) |
| Flight reservation for the file | Dummy Ticket 365 | USD 13 for 2 days, USD 20 for 7 days, USD 23 for 14 days (Dummy Ticket 365) |
If you are also weighing Spain, our post on the BLS International process covers the Spanish side, and the insurance requirements explainer goes deeper on the EUR 30,000 rule. For anything not covered here, our FAQ answers the common document questions.
