Schengen Visa with a New Job: Applying Before Probation Ends

Updated 11 Oct 202612 min read12 sectionsAmmar Afridi
The Short Answer

Yes, you can apply for a Schengen visa while on probation. No UAE consulate checklist sets a minimum time in a job, but Germany, Italy and Greece all require an employer letter stating your start date and salary, plus 3 to 6 months of stamped bank statements. Include pay slips from your previous job, wait until your residence visa is on the new sponsor, and lodge 15 days before travel.

Schengen Visa with a New Job: Applying Before Probation Ends

Yes, you can apply for a Schengen visa while you are still on probation in a new UAE job. No Schengen consulate in the UAE publishes a minimum length of employment, but every checklist asks for your start date and your salary, so a short tenure is visible to the officer. The application succeeds when the rest of the file, meaning bank history, residence visa validity and a proper employer letter, proves you will come back.

Can you apply for a Schengen visa while on probation?

Yes. There is no rule, in the EU Visa Code or on any UAE consulate checklist we have read, that says an applicant must have completed probation or held a job for a set number of months. The European Commission lists what the file must show: the purpose of the stay, financial means and accommodation, and evidence of your intention to return after the trip.

Probation itself is a UAE labour law concept. Under Article 9 of Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021, an employer may keep you on probation for no more than six months from the date you start work, and can end the contract with 14 days' written notice during that time. The visa officer sees that in your start date and reads it as a weaker tie than a two-year tenure.

So the question is not "am I allowed to apply" but "does my file answer the doubt". The rest of this guide is about answering it.

What does the employer letter need to say when you have just joined?

It needs the same things as any other applicant's letter, and it must not hide your start date. The German missions ask for a letter from the local employer with the applicant's working position, starting date of employment, salary and timeframe of work leave, with the company's name, postal address and telephone number. Italy's consulate in Dubai wants the NOC to state the start of employment date, monthly salary, duration and purpose of leave, and the name, designation, direct phone and email of the managerial signatory, with a copy of that signatory's passport and UAE visa.

Greece's checklist adds two lines that help a new joiner: the letter should state employment status and length of contract. Ask your HR to write "unlimited contract" or "two-year contract, started 3 August 2026" rather than leaving the term out. A named manager who confirms you have a role to return to is the strongest single sentence in the file.

Ask for one more line: that the company has approved your leave and expects you back on a specific date. The Italy checklist asks for the leave duration anyway, and a return date turns a vague trip into a scheduled absence.

Can you take leave during probation in the UAE?

Yes, if your employer agrees. Article 29(3) of the labour law says the employer may agree to grant the worker leave from his annual leave balance during the probationary period. The same article sets leave at two days per month once you pass six months of service, so a probationer has little accrued and is relying on goodwill.

Get the approval in writing before you book a VFS Global or BLS International appointment. The consulate wants the leave dates in the employer letter, and an employer who has not agreed to the trip will not sign one.

How do you prove financial means with only one or two new pay slips?

Show the whole picture, not just the new job. Germany asks for personal bank statements of at least the last 3 months before application, Italy for last 3 months pay slips, last 3 months bank statements and last 3 months credit card statements, and Greece for a personal bank account statement for the past 6 months. Those windows reach back into your previous job, and that is fine: the statements show your old salary landing, then your new one.

Add the last three pay slips from your previous employer alongside the new ones, so the officer sees continuous income rather than a gap. If your new salary is higher, the contract and the employer letter make that jump credible.

Two format rules trip up new joiners who have just opened a salary account.

Italy states that foreign bank accounts will not be considered and that online statements must carry the original bank stamp. Greece rejects internet extracts without stamp. Print the statements at the branch and get them stamped, even if your new account is only weeks old.

Does your residence visa need to be on the new company already?

Yes for a clean file, and it must have enough validity left. The Italy checklist requires a copy of a UAE residence visa valid at least 90 days from the intended return date, and Greece wants the residence permit valid at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen area. A residence visa that still names your old sponsor, or one that has been cancelled while the new one is in process, contradicts the employer letter.

If your new visa is stamped, the mismatch disappears and a fresh two-year residence visa is a good tie in itself. If it is still in process, wait for it. Filing on a cancelled or expiring residence visa is one of the fastest routes to a refusal.

Where you file depends on where that residence visa was issued. The German missions send Dubai and Northern Emirates residents to VFS Global in Dubai, and Abu Dhabi and Al Ain residents to VFS Global in Abu Dhabi. Spain uses the BLS Spain Visa Application Centre, and every centre works by appointment only.

When should you lodge the application?

Lodge it at least 15 days before you fly, and once your residence visa and at least one new pay slip are in hand. The European Commission states that you must submit at least 15 days before your intended journey and no earlier than 6 months beforehand. Spain's embassy in Abu Dhabi restates the window as between 6 months and 15 days before the scheduled date of travel.

The decision takes 15 calendar days from the day after submission, extendable to 45 calendar days if an interview or additional documents are requested. Thin employment history is exactly the kind of file that gets the extension, so a new joiner should not book non-refundable travel inside that 45-day window.

Your passport stays with the consulate until the decision. Italy's checklist says plainly that the passport will not be returned until the final decision on the visa is adopted, so do not plan any other travel, including a GCC trip, in that period.

Should you wait until probation ends before applying?

Only if waiting changes the file. If your residence visa is not yet stamped, or you have no UAE pay slips at all, waiting a month or two gives you the documents the checklists ask for. If the visa is stamped and you have two or three months of statements showing salary from either job, there is no benefit in waiting for a probation date that the consulate does not ask about.

Two things strengthen a short-tenure file more than time does. Previous Schengen, UK or US visas, which Italy asks you to copy into the application, show a history of returning. A spouse and children on your sponsorship staying behind in the UAE, or a tenancy contract in your name, show ties that have nothing to do with your employer.

If you are unsure which of these you can produce, VisaWadi's Schengen visa service reviews the file before you book. We prepare Schengen applications for UAE residents, filed through VFS Global or BLS International in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with packages from AED 299.

Why do Schengen applications from new employees get refused?

The refusal ground is doubt about your return, not the new job as such. Spain's embassy lists the three things the file must prove: purpose of travel, sufficient financial means, and the intention of the applicant to leave the Schengen area before the visa expires. A new joiner is weak on the third, and the avoidable errors below make it worse.

  • Employer letter with no start date or salary. Germany, Italy and Greece all require both. A letter that omits them looks like it is hiding something, and the officer can see the date on your residence visa anyway.
  • Residence visa on the old sponsor. The letter says one company, the visa says another. Wait for the new stamp.
  • Bank statements that start the day you joined. Three or six months of history is the rule. Include the account you were paid into before, and get every page stamped.
  • Unstamped online printouts. Italy and Greece say so on the checklist, and a file with unstamped printouts gets sent back at the counter.
  • Leave dates that do not match the trip. If the letter approves 10 days and the hotel booking covers 16, the file contradicts itself.
  • Insurance that stops before the return flight. Cover must run for the entire period of intended stay, valid for all Schengen States, with minimum EUR 30,000. Insurance card copies are not accepted.

A refusal is notified in writing with reasons, and for Spain you can submit an appeal for reconsideration within 1 month. It is cheaper to get the file right first, and our guide to the Schengen cover letter shows how to explain a recent job change in your own words.

What does a Schengen visa cost from the UAE?

Three separate charges: the consulate fee, the visa centre fee and, if you use one, an assistance fee. The consulate fee is set EU-wide and has been EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged six to under 12 since 11 June 2024. Germany's missions collect it in UAE dirhams at the consulate's current exchange rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Neither the EU Visa Code nor the German, Italian or Greek checklists for the UAE set a minimum number of months in a job. They ask for your start date and salary in an employer letter, and for three to six months of bank statements, which can include income from your previous employer.
Yes, and without it your file is incomplete. Leave during probation is at the employer's discretion under Article 29(3) of the UAE labour law, so get written leave approval first, then ask HR for the letter stating your position, start date, salary and leave dates on letterhead, signed by a named manager.
Yes. Germany and Italy ask for the last 3 months of statements and Greece for 6, which reach back into your old job, so showing the previous salary landing and then the new one proves continuous income. Get every page stamped by the bank, because Italy and Greece reject unstamped online printouts.
Wait until the new residence visa is stamped. Italy requires a residence visa valid at least 90 days after your return date, and a visa that names your old sponsor contradicts the employer letter. Filing during the transfer, or on a cancelled visa, is a common cause of refusal for new joiners.
15 calendar days from the day after submission, which the consulate can extend to 45 calendar days if it wants an interview or more documents. Files with a short employment history are more likely to get the extension, so lodge at least 15 days before travel and avoid non-refundable bookings inside the 45-day window.
