Schengen Visa Salary Requirements: How Much Is Enough?
There is no minimum salary for a Schengen visa. Consulates check that your bank statements cover a daily reference amount for the trip: EUR 45 per day for Germany, EUR 65 for France with hotels booked, EUR 122.10 for Spain with a EUR 1,098.90 floor. From the UAE you show stamped statements for 3 to 6 months plus an NOC stating your salary, and the salary must match the credits.

There is no minimum salary for a Schengen visa. No embassy publishes an AED figure, and the Visa Code does not ask for one. What the consulate checks is whether your bank statements show enough money to cover the trip at that country's daily reference amount, plus a salary and job that make sense of the balance and give you a reason to come home.

What you need to prove your finances
- Personal bank statements, stamped by the bank: at least the last 3 months for Germany, the last 6 months for Greece
- An original NOC or employment letter stating your position, start date, contract length, salary and approved leave dates (Greece, Germany)
- Salary certificates or payslips, optional for Greece but worth adding when the bank statement alone is thin (Greece checklist)
- A valid trade licence instead of an NOC if you are self-sponsored (Greece checklist)
- If a spouse or parent is paying: their NOC, passport copy, UAE residence visa copy and their bank statements (Greece, Portugal)
- A UAE residence permit valid at least three months beyond the end of the requested visa (German Consulate Dubai)
- Schengen-compliant travel insurance with EUR 30,000 medical cover, credit card insurance not accepted (German Consulate Dubai)
- A return flight reservation and hotel booking, because both change the daily amount you must show
Is there a minimum salary for a Schengen visa from the UAE?
No. The European Commission's own guidance lists "evidence of financial means" and evidence of your intention to return, not a salary threshold, in its list of what a Schengen application must show. The consulate looks at the whole picture: what you earn, what you have saved, and whether the trip is affordable on both.
That said, salary matters in two indirect ways. A stable income in the UAE is the strongest evidence that you will leave the Schengen area before your visa expires, and a salary that cannot explain your bank balance raises questions about where the money came from.
So the honest answer to "how much is enough" is: enough to cover the daily reference amount for your trip, arriving in your account as regular salary credits, without any last-minute deposits. The next sections put numbers on that.

How do consulates decide if your funds are sufficient?
They multiply a daily reference amount by the number of days you plan to stay. The EU rule is that means of subsistence are assessed by the duration and purpose of the stay against average prices for budget board and lodging in the country concerned, using reference amounts each state notifies to the Commission, as set out in the Commission's Schengen visa guidance and listed country by country in Annex 25 of the Practical Handbook for Border Guards.
Two things reduce the figure. Prepaid accommodation lowers what you need in cash, and a sponsor who covers your costs can replace part of the proof entirely. The German Consulate Dubai accepts a formal obligation letter from a host in Germany, in original and no older than six months.
Two things raise it. Travelling without a hotel booking pushes France's daily amount up sharply, and travelling with dependants multiplies Spain's figure by each person.
How much money per day does each Schengen country expect?
The amounts below come from Annex 25, the official list of national reference amounts, dated 1 April 2026. They are border-entry figures, and consulates use the same yardstick when they read your statements.
| Country | Reference amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| France | EUR 65 per day | EUR 120 per day with no hotel reservation; EUR 32.50 per day with an attestation d'accueil from a host |
| Germany | EUR 45 per day | No mandatory figure; officials assess each case, and EUR 45 applies where nothing else is shown |
| Spain | EUR 122.10 per day per person | Minimum EUR 1,098.90 per person regardless of trip length |
| Italy | EUR 269.60 fixed for 1 to 5 days | EUR 44.93 per day for 6 to 10 days; EUR 51.64 plus EUR 36.67 per day for 11 to 20 days (solo traveller) |
| Greece | EUR 50 per person per day | Minimum EUR 300 for stays up to 5 days; halved for minors |
| Netherlands | EUR 55 per person per day | Applied flexibly according to purpose and circumstances |
| Switzerland | Approx. CHF 100 per day | Approx. CHF 30 per day for students with a valid student card |
| Austria | No reference amount | Decided case by case on purpose, type and duration of stay |
Worked example: a ten-day trip to Spain means EUR 1,221 at the daily rate, which already clears the EUR 1,098.90 floor. The same ten days in Germany is EUR 450, and in France with hotels booked it is EUR 650.
Those are minimums for subsistence, not for approval. A file that shows the bare figure and nothing else is weak, so aim to show comfortably more, and make sure the money was there over the whole statement period rather than deposited the week before.
Which bank statements do UAE visa centres accept?
Stamped personal statements, covering the period the consulate sets. Germany asks for personal bank statements of at least the last 3 months before application, and adds property and other assets as acceptable proof. Greece asks for the past 6 months and rejects internet extracts without a bank stamp.
Portugal wants originally signed and stamped statements for the last 3 months, and lets you attach a copy of a credit card valid for the whole stay. Spain's own border rules in Annex 25 state that bank letters and internet bank statements are not acceptable, so a printout from your banking app will not do.
The statement should show your salary landing each month under your employer's name. If your pay comes in cash, ask your employer to include the salary in the NOC and deposit it on a fixed date so the pattern is visible.
What should the salary certificate or NOC say?
Position, start date, contract length, salary and approved leave, on letterhead, in original. The Greece checklist requires the NOC to state date of recruitment, position, employment status, length of contract and salary, and the German Consulate Dubai lists the same fields plus the approved leave timeframe.
Portugal adds a date rule: the NOC must be dated no more than one month before submission. Check that the salary on the letter matches the credits on your statement to the dirham, because a mismatch is one of the easiest things for a visa officer to spot.
Self-employed or a partner in a business? Greece accepts a valid trade licence copy for self-sponsored applicants, and Portugal wants the licence authenticated by UAE MoFA alongside a letter signed by someone who can bind the company. Our guide to Schengen visas for freelancers and business owners covers the extra evidence that helps.
Can a sponsor's salary count instead of yours?
Yes, if the relationship and the money are both documented. Greece requires the sponsor's NOC, passport and UAE residence visa copy for anyone sponsored by a spouse or parent. Portugal requires the sponsor's original bank statements plus a letter confirming they are paying for the trip.
A host in the destination country can also carry the cost. Germany accepts a formal obligation letter, and France's reference amount drops to EUR 32.50 per day with an attestation d'accueil validated by the host's town hall.
Sponsorship does not remove the need for your own ties. A housewife applying on her husband's salary still needs proof of her residence status, and a dependant student still needs an enrolment letter, because the consulate is judging whether you will return as much as whether the trip is paid for.
Why do Schengen applications get refused on finances?
Because the file fails to show either enough money or where it came from. France lists failing to present proof of resources, and an unestablished intention to leave as refusal grounds, and the Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi asks every applicant to corroborate sufficient financial means and the intention to leave before the visa expires. The avoidable causes we see from the UAE:
- Lump-sum deposits. A transfer that lands two weeks before you apply and dwarfs your salary reads as borrowed money. Apply after the statement period shows your normal pattern instead.
- Salary and statement do not match. An NOC quoting AED 12,000 while the statement shows AED 7,000 credits invites a refusal.
- Unstamped or online statements. Greece and Spain say outright that these are not accepted, and other posts can ask for the same.
- Balance below the reference amount. Work out the daily figure for your destination and days, then check the closing balance covers it with room to spare.
- No accommodation proof. Without a hotel booking France's daily amount nearly doubles, and any country will question how the stay is funded.
- Incomplete file. Greece states that an application without the full checklist may be rejected, and the fee is not refunded after a refusal.

Children under six pay no visa fee. Embassy and visa-centre fees are passed through at cost and are never part of the VisaWadi package price.
How long does the decision take?
15 calendar days, extendable to 45. The Commission states the normal processing time is 15 days, and the Spanish Embassy in Abu Dhabi puts it as 15 calendar days from the day after submission, extendable to 45 calendar days if an interview or further documents are needed.
Apply at least 15 days before travel and no earlier than 6 months before. Germany's Dubai post caps this at 180 days before the intended journey. If you are unsure which consulate to file with, see our post on the main destination rule.
