Canada Super Visa vs Visitor Visa: Which One Fits Your Trip?
Choose the Canada super visa if your child or grandchild is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and you want to stay more than six months at a time: it allows stays of up to five years. Choose the visitor visa for holidays or short trips of up to six months. Both cost CAN$100 plus CAN$85 biometrics, but the super visa also needs a medical exam and CAN$100,000 of insurance.

Pick the super visa if your child or grandchild is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and you want to stay with them for more than six months at a stretch. Pick the visitor visa if you are going for a holiday, a short family visit or a business trip of up to six months. Both cost CAN$100 to file, but the super visa asks for a medical exam, a year of insurance and proof of your host's income.
| Fact | Super visa | Visitor visa |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Parents and grandparents of a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian (IRCC) | Anyone from a visa-required country visiting for tourism, family or business (IRCC) |
| Stay per visit | Up to 5 years at a time (IRCC) | Up to 6 months for most visitors (IRCC) |
| Validity | Multiple entries for up to 10 years (IRCC) | Up to 10 years, or until your passport or biometrics expire, whichever comes first (IRCC) |
| Government fee | CAN$100 per person plus CAN$85 biometrics (IRCC fee list) | CAN$100 per person plus CAN$85 biometrics (IRCC fee list) |
| Medical exam | Required, with a panel physician (IRCC) | Not needed for a standard visit (IRCC) |
| Insurance | Private health insurance with at least CAN$100,000 emergency cover, valid one year from entry (IRCC) | Not an IRCC requirement |
| Host income test | Host must meet the minimum necessary income (IRCC) | None |
Here is what goes into the file. The visitor visa list is the base, and the super visa adds the last five items.
- Passport valid for at least six months from your planned travel date (IRCC)
- UAE residence visa and Emirates ID copy, since you are applying from your country of residence
- Bank statements showing at least six months of account activity and balances (IRCC)
- Employer letter confirming your job, with your full name and date of birth (IRCC)
- Copies of previous visas and entry and exit stamps in your passport (IRCC)
- Invitation letter from the person you are visiting (IRCC)
- Flight reservation showing your intended dates, for example from Dummy Ticket 365
- Super visa only: letter of invitation signed by your child or grandchild, with proof of their income and their family size list (IRCC)
- Super visa only: copy of the host's Canadian citizenship, permanent resident document or status card (IRCC)
- Super visa only: proof of relationship, such as the host's birth certificate naming you as the parent (IRCC)
- Super visa only: paid insurance policy with at least CAN$100,000 emergency cover for one year, not a quote (IRCC)
- Super visa only: proof of an immigration medical exam with an approved panel physician (IRCC)
Canada super visa vs visitor visa: which one fits your trip?
The super visa fits a long stay with family, and the visitor visa fits everything else. IRCC puts it plainly on the super visa page: if you want to stay for six months or less, apply for a visitor visa instead.
The two documents look similar in the passport and cost the same to file. The difference is in what you can do once you land, and in how much paperwork your child in Canada has to produce.
For a UAE resident, nationality still decides whether you need either one. Both are for people from visa-required countries, so a parent holding a visa-exempt passport gets a letter for the border officer rather than a sticker, and may need an eTA to fly (IRCC).
How long can you stay in Canada on each visa?
A super visa lets you stay for up to five years at a time, while a visitor visa allows up to six months per visit. IRCC states that super visa holders can visit their children or grandchildren "for 5 years at a time" and that the visa "provides multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years" (IRCC).
On a visitor visa, "most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada" per entry (IRCC). The visa itself can be valid for up to ten years, or until your passport or biometrics expire, whichever comes first.
That validity difference matters less than it looks. A ten-year visitor visa still limits each stay to six months, so a grandparent who wants to help with a newborn for a year is better served by the super visa.

Who is eligible for a Canada super visa?
You qualify if you are the biological or adopted parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or registered Indian who is at least 18 and lives in Canada (IRCC). You must be outside Canada when you submit the application, which is fine if you are applying from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah.
You cannot add dependants to a super visa application (IRCC). A couple applies as two separate applicants, and a younger sibling travelling with you needs their own visitor visa.
Your host carries half the burden. They have to sign a letter of invitation and show that their income meets or exceeds the minimum necessary income for their family size (IRCC).
How much income does your child in Canada need to show?
Your host needs to hit the minimum necessary income for their family size in either of the two tax years before you apply. IRCC allows the host to show that "their total income (including the co-signer's income, if applicable) meets or exceeds the minimum required amount in either of the 2 tax years before the application is submitted" (IRCC).
The threshold rises with family size. For a household of one person the figure on the current IRCC table is CAN$30,526, and you, the visiting parent, count as a member of that household (IRCC).
Two things soften the test. The host or their co-signer proves income with a CRA notice of assessment, and if they fall short, IRCC says "you can add your own income to cover the remaining amount, if needed" (IRCC).
What insurance and medical exam does the super visa require?
You need a paid private health insurance policy with at least CAN$100,000 of emergency cover, valid for one year from the date you enter Canada (IRCC). IRCC is explicit that the policy must "be paid in full or in instalments with a deposit (quotes aren't accepted)".
Since 28 January 2025 the insurer no longer has to be Canadian. IRCC now accepts a policy "from companies outside Canada", provided the insurer is authorised by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions and appears on OSFI's list of federally regulated financial institutions (IRCC notice).
The medical exam is the other hard requirement. Ordinary visitors do not need one, but super visa applicants do, and IRCC states that "you must see a doctor on the list of panel physicians" because your own doctor cannot do it (IRCC).
How do you apply for either visa from the UAE?
Both applications go through the IRCC Portal, and both end with a biometrics appointment at a visa application centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. IRCC lists a Dubai VAC and an Abu Dhabi VAC for the United Arab Emirates, describing VACs as "private companies that have formal contracts with the Government of Canada" (IRCC).
After you submit and pay, IRCC sends a biometrics instruction letter, and "you have 30 days from the time you get your BIL to give your biometrics" (IRCC). Our guide to Canada visa biometrics in the UAE walks through the appointment itself.
Processing time is the one figure IRCC will not publish as a fixed number. The processing times tool gives a current estimate by application type and country, and the published figure excludes the time you take to give biometrics. We track the current UAE numbers in our post on IRCC processing times for UAE applicants.

Why do Canada super visa and visitor visa applications get refused?
The avoidable refusals come down to a weak file rather than a weak case. On the super visa side, the host's income proof is the usual gap: a letter of invitation without a notice of assessment, or a family size count that leaves out a spouse or child, fails the income test before an officer reads anything else (IRCC).
Insurance quotes are another common mistake. IRCC only accepts a policy that is paid in full or in instalments with a deposit, so an unpaid quote from an insurer is treated as no insurance at all (IRCC).
For the visitor visa, the officer wants evidence that you will leave at the end of your visit. Thin bank statements, no employer letter and no proof of your UAE residence give them nothing to weigh, and we cover the specific patterns in Canada visitor visa refusal reasons for UAE applicants and Canada visitor visa financial requirements.
Missing the 30-day biometrics window is the last self-inflicted wound. Book the Dubai or Abu Dhabi appointment as soon as the instruction letter arrives (IRCC).
What does each visa cost from the UAE?
Government fees are identical for both visas. The extra super visa cost comes from the insurance policy and the panel physician exam, which are paid to private providers and vary by age and clinic.
| Item | Super visa | Visitor visa | Paid to |
|---|---|---|---|
| IRCC application fee | CAN$100 per person (IRCC fee list) | CAN$100 per person, capped at CAN$500 for a family of five or more (IRCC fee list) | IRCC |
| Biometrics | CAN$85 per person, CAN$170 maximum per family applying together (IRCC fee list) | Same | IRCC |
| Private health insurance | Required, CAN$100,000 minimum cover for one year, price set by the insurer | Not required | Insurer |
| Immigration medical exam | Required, fee set by the panel physician | Not required | Panel physician |
| VisaWadi service fee | Packages from AED 699 | Packages from AED 699 | VisaWadi |
| Optional trip cover for a short visit | Does not replace the super visa policy | AXA-issued cover from AED 30 | Travl |
| Flight reservation with a real PNR | USD 13 for 2 days validity | USD 13 for 2 days validity | Dummy Ticket 365 |
Embassy and visa-centre fees are passed through at cost. VisaWadi never marks them up, and the Canada visa service page lists what each package covers.
