Canada Visitor Visa Financial Requirements for UAE Residents

The Short Answer

Canada sets no minimum bank balance for a visitor visa. The Abu Dhabi visa office checklist (IMM 5853) asks for three months of bank statements plus proof such as an employment letter or pay slips, and the online application page describes six months of account details. Sponsors supply a signed letter, ID copy and bank certificate dated within three months. The visa fee is CAD 100 plus CAD 85 biometrics.

Canada Visitor Visa Financial Requirements for UAE Residents

Canada sets no minimum bank balance for a visitor visa, but the Abu Dhabi visa office wants three months of bank statements plus proof of where the money comes from. Your file has to show you can pay for the trip, keep supporting yourself at home and return to the UAE afterwards. This guide covers exactly which financial documents to submit from Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah and what gets applications refused.

How much money do I need in my bank account for a Canada visitor visa?

There is no published figure. IRCC's eligibility page lists the requirement as "have enough money for your stay" and gives no dollar or dirham amount (IRCC). The paper application guide phrases the same test as showing you have enough money to maintain yourself and your family members in Canada and to return home (Guide 5256).

In practice the officer reads your balance against your itinerary. A two week trip for one person on a modest hotel budget needs far less than a month-long family visit, so match the money you show to the plan you submit.

Be careful with the wording: "enough for your stay" is about the whole trip, including flights, accommodation, daily spending and the return. A balance that only just covers the airfare will not convince anyone.

How many months of bank statements does the Abu Dhabi visa office want?

Three months, according to the Abu Dhabi office's own checklist. Form IMM 5853, the additional document checklist for temporary resident visa applicants handled by Abu Dhabi, asks for "copies of bank statements or bank book covering the past three months" as proof of financial support to cover the expenses for the duration of your visit (IMM 5853, April 2026).

The online application page tells a slightly different story. Under proof of funds it describes a bank account statement showing "at least 6 months of account details, including balances" (IRCC how to apply).

Our advice is to supply six months. It satisfies both checklists, and a longer history makes salary deposits and regular spending patterns much easier for the officer to read.

What does a good statement look like? A stamped statement from your UAE bank with your name, account number and a steady pattern of salary credits. The Abu Dhabi checklist pairs the statements with "any additional relevant documentation (employment letter, pay slips, proof of pension, business registration, investments, etc.)", so the statement should agree with the salary on your employment letter (IMM 5853).

Sudden large deposits are the classic problem. If a relative transferred AED 50,000 into your account last month, the officer sees money that may not be yours and cannot tell whether it will still be there when you travel.

If you must move money before applying, do it early and explain it. A short cover letter and the source of the funds go a long way, and VisaWadi's Canada visa assistance team reviews every statement for exactly these red flags before the file goes in.

What if someone else is paying, or I run my own business?

Then the payer's finances go in the file, not just yours. IMM 5853 states that if you are not paying for your own trip you must provide a letter signed by the person paying, describing how they are related to you, a photocopy of their passport or other official photo ID, and a bank certificate proving they have sufficient funds (IMM 5853).

Those documents must be dated within three months of the date the application is submitted (IMM 5853). An old bank letter from a sponsor is one of the easiest ways to get an otherwise strong file bounced.

Business travellers follow a separate rule. The same checklist asks for letters from your employer and the host company in Canada outlining the purpose of the visit, and the letters should say who is bearing all travel costs (IMM 5853).

Self-employed applicants and business owners need their trade licence and personal statements. The Abu Dhabi checklist asks self-employed applicants and business owners for copies of the company's trade licence indicating the expiry date and the number of shareholders, and this document must always be accompanied by an English or French translation (IMM 5853).

You also need copies of your personal bank statements for the past three months (IMM 5853). Company statements alone do not show that you personally have money to spend in Canada.

Freelance permit holders in free zones sit in a grey area. Submit the permit, a bank history that shows client payments, and a short note explaining how your income works so the officer is not left guessing.

Which documents prove I will come back to the UAE?

Your residence visa, your job and your family here. IRCC says you must convince an officer that you have ties, such as a job, home, financial assets or family, that will take you back to your home country, and that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit (IRCC eligibility).

For an expat this cuts two ways. The officer weighs your ties to the UAE and to your passport country, so a copy of your Gulf residence visa is on the Abu Dhabi checklist if it is not in your current passport (IMM 5853). The general checklist also asks for proof of legal status in your country of residence where it differs from your citizenship (IMM 5484).

Nationality changes the level of scrutiny. Applicants from countries with high overstay rates should expect the officer to lean harder on the ties question, so an employment letter confirming approved leave and a return date is worth more than an extra bank statement.

Do I need a flight booking, hotel and travel insurance for the file?

Not always, but the Abu Dhabi office lists them. Under "information about your stay in Canada", IMM 5853 asks for an invitation letter and host documents, registrations for events you plan to attend, and, if applicable, a flight itinerary, hotel reservations and proof of travel insurance (IMM 5853).

Do not buy a non-refundable ticket before the decision. A flight reservation with a real PNR from Dummy Ticket 365 covers the itinerary line for USD 13 for two days of validity, USD 20 for seven days or USD 23 for fourteen days, and arrives by email in minutes.

For the insurance line, Travl issues AXA-backed travel insurance from AED 30. It is not mandatory for a standard visitor visa, but a policy dated to your itinerary shows the trip is planned and funded.

How do I apply and what happens after I submit?

Online through the IRCC Portal, then biometrics at VFS Global. IRCC states you can use the IRCC Portal to apply for a visitor visa, and that if you are applying for the first time you must pay the biometrics fee when you submit the application (IRCC how to apply).

After paying, you wait for a biometric instruction letter and then have 30 days from the time you get it to give your fingerprints and photo at a visa application centre (IRCC where to give biometrics). In the UAE that is the VFS Global Canada centre in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and our Canada biometrics guide walks through the booking.

Biometrics stay valid for 10 years, and if you gave them within the last 10 years they are automatically attached to your new visitor visa (IRCC). IRCC says it processes most applications in a few weeks or less, and the time you take to give biometrics is not counted (IRCC after you apply). Check the live figure for the UAE on the processing times tool before booking anything.

Why do Canada visitor visa applications from the UAE get refused on financial grounds?

Because the money does not match the story. IRCC's refusal guidance names the purpose of the visit and your employment or financial situation as reasons a decision goes against you, and it warns that reapplying with the same information will likely not change the decision (IRCC help centre).

The avoidable causes we see most often in UAE files:

  • A balance that appeared in the last few weeks with no explanation of where it came from
  • Statements that do not show the salary stated on the employment letter
  • A sponsor's letter or bank certificate older than three months, which breaks the IMM 5853 dating rule
  • A trade licence submitted without the required English or French translation
  • No proof of UAE residence status in the file, leaving the officer to assess ties to the passport country alone
  • An itinerary that costs far more than the funds shown, or a long stay with no explanation of how it is paid for

A refusal is not the end. The decision in your IRCC account explains why the application was refused (IRCC), and the right move is to fix that specific point before filing again. The same logic applies to UK files, which we cover in our post on UK visa refusal reasons and how to reapply.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, IRCC publishes no minimum figure; the eligibility rule is that you have enough money for your stay and to return home. The officer judges your balance against your itinerary, so a short solo trip needs far less than a month-long family visit. Show funds that comfortably cover flights, accommodation and daily costs.
Submit six months. The Abu Dhabi visa office checklist (IMM 5853) asks for statements covering the past three months, while the online application page describes a statement showing at least six months of account details with balances. Six months satisfies both and shows a clearer salary pattern.
Yes. If someone else pays, IMM 5853 requires a letter signed by the payer describing your relationship, a copy of their passport or photo ID, and a bank certificate proving sufficient funds. All three must be dated within three months of the submission date, or the file risks refusal.
A copy of the company trade licence showing the expiry date and number of shareholders, with an English or French translation, plus personal bank statements for the past three months. Company accounts alone are not enough, because the officer needs to see money you personally can spend on the trip.
CAD 100 for the visa plus CAD 85 for biometrics per person, paid to IRCC online and not refunded if refused. Families of five or more pay a CAD 500 visa cap and a CAD 170 biometrics cap. VisaWadi's Canada visa packages start at AED 699 on top of those government fees.
