DS-160 Form Mistakes That Delay US Visa Applications

Most DS-160 delays come from a handful of avoidable errors: a barcode that does not match the appointment, a name typed differently from the passport, a failed photo upload, a travel history left blank or a form signed with something untrue. The State Department warns that an inaccurate or incomplete DS-160 can mean correcting the form and rescheduling your interview. This guide takes UAE residents through each mistake and its fix.

What you need before you open the DS-160

Have everything below on the desk before you start, because the State Department lists these as the documents to keep with you while completing the DS-160.

• Your passport, valid for at least six months beyond your planned stay in the United States
• Travel itinerary, if you have already made travel arrangements
• Dates of your last five visits to the United States, if you have been before
• Your international travel history for the past five years
• Your CV, since the form asks for current and previous education and work history
• A digital photo that meets the State Department photo rules
• Your UAE address, phone numbers, employer address and Emirates ID details
• Full names and dates of birth of parents, and of your spouse if married

Why does the DS-160 barcode need to match my appointment?

Because since 1 April 2025 the consulate turns you away if it does not. The State Department rule says every applicant must bring a DS-160 with a confirmation number starting AA that matches the one used to book the appointment online, and if the numbers differ you will not be allowed to interview.

This is the single most expensive mistake on the list. Applicants who book their slot with a draft barcode, then start a fresh form and submit a new one, arrive with a mismatch and have to cancel and rebook with the correct number.

What happens if I make a typo in my name or passport number?

A wrong name or passport number leaves the consulate unable to match you to your form, and you may be told to correct the DS-160 and come back. The State Department help text asks you to enter all surnames exactly as written in your passport, and to enter your date of birth as shown in your passport.

Two rules trip up UAE residents in particular. If your passport shows only one name, that name goes in the surname field, and if it has no given name you type FNU, meaning first name unknown.

The other names field is not optional in practice. The FAQs say to enter your maiden name, religious name or any other name you have been known by, in full, so a married applicant who dropped a surname must list it.

Can I fill in the DS-160 in Arabic, Urdu or Hindi?

No. The State Department requires all answers in English using English characters, except where the form asks for your full name in your native alphabet, and applications submitted in another language will be denied and may need to be resubmitted.

Translations of the questions are available from a drop-down menu in the top right of the form. Use them to understand the question, then answer in English.

The same page rules out the browsers many people reach for first. Only Internet Explorer 11 or higher, Firefox or Google Chrome 58 are supported, and Safari and Microsoft Edge are not.

Why did my DS-160 time out and lose my answers?

It did not lose them, but you need the application ID to get them back. The State Department says all information is automatically saved when each page is completed, and you retrieve the form by entering the application ID and answering the security question.

The trap is the 30 day limit. You have 30 days to return to a partially completed application online, and after that you can only recover it if you clicked Save Application to File and kept a copy on your own computer.

A second trap is the review page. Edits made from the review page links only save if you move between pages with the buttons at the bottom of each page, not the browser back button or the side menu.

What if my photo upload fails or shows an X?

An X in the photo box on your confirmation page means the upload failed, and you must then bring one printed photo to the consulate. The State Department FAQs say a confirmation page with a visible photo image means the upload worked and no printed photo is needed.

Failed uploads are almost always a specification problem. The photo rules require colour, a plain white or off-white background, a neutral expression with both eyes open, no eyeglasses, and a picture taken within the last six months.

Can I edit a DS-160 after I have submitted it?

Not directly, and the fix depends on where you are in the process. If you have not yet booked, you submit a new DS-160 and use the new barcode to schedule, since the State Department overview says you print the barcode page and then schedule the interview yourself.

If you have already booked, the barcode on your appointment must match the final form. The consular guidance is to log into the appointment system, cancel the current slot, update the DS-160 confirmation number in your profile, and book again.

If the consulate itself finds errors at interview, the FAQs say it should reopen your DS-160 and ask you to correct it, after which you contact the consulate for instructions on whether a new appointment is needed. Reopening is at the consulate's discretion, so do not rely on it.

Which questions do people answer wrong most often?

The five year travel history, previous US visas, and the security and background questions. The State Department says most questions are mandatory, that you may only leave blanks where a question is marked optional, and that the system rejects a form where a question that applies to you is unanswered.

Travel history is where UAE expats slip. Five years of trips out of the country, in order, with the exact dates, is a lot for someone who flies home twice a year and takes weekend breaks, but a gap that shows up in your passport stamps raises questions.

Previous employers should be limited to your last two, and the FAQs suggest bringing a separate written list of others to the interview. Nationality must include every nationality you hold or have held, even one you have given up.

When you click Sign Application you certify the answers are true, and the State Department warns that a false or misleading statement can mean permanent refusal of a visa or denial of entry. Answer the security questions honestly, including any prior refusal or overstay.

Why do US visa applications from the UAE get refused?

Two sections of the Immigration and Nationality Act cover almost every refusal, and both connect back to the DS-160. A refusal under section 221(g) means the officer did not have all the information needed, which includes application forms that are incomplete, and you have one year to supply what is missing before you must reapply and pay again.

A refusal under section 214(b) means you did not show strong enough ties to the UAE to satisfy the officer you will leave the United States after your visit. There is no appeal, and to reapply you complete a new form, pay the fee again and book a new interview.

The avoidable causes we see in files from Dubai and Abu Dhabi are these:

• A DS-160 that lists a different employer, job title or salary from the documents brought to interview
• Travel dates or a US contact on the form that contradict what the applicant says at the window
• Undeclared previous refusals, from any country, that show up in the record
• A weak answer to the purpose of trip question, such as a single word, where the officer wanted a specific plan
• Family or group forms copied from one applicant without changing the details that differ

Misrepresenting a material fact is a separate ground under section 212(a)(6)(C)(i), and unlike a 214(b) refusal it follows you. That is why the review pass on a DS-160 matters more than the speed of filling it in.

What does a US visitor visa from the UAE cost?
