US Tourist Visa Bank Statement Requirements for UAE Residents
There is no minimum bank balance for a US B1/B2 tourist visa. The State Department requires only a passport, DS-160 confirmation, fee receipt and photo, and treats bank statements as optional evidence of your ability to pay for the trip. Bring statements showing regular salary credits, an employer letter and asset proof, and note that the US Embassy currently says routine visa processing is not available in the UAE.

There is no minimum bank balance and no fixed number of months of statements for a US B1/B2 tourist visa. The State Department lists your passport, DS-160 confirmation page, fee receipt and photo as the required items, and treats financial evidence as optional support you may be asked for. Bank statements matter because they help you show you can pay for the trip and that your life is anchored in the UAE.

Is there a minimum bank balance for a US tourist visa?
No. The State Department publishes no minimum balance, no required number of months and no formula tied to the length of your trip. What it does say is that additional documents "may include evidence of: The purpose of your trip, Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or Your ability to pay all costs of the trip" (travel.state.gov visitor visa page).
That changes how you should think about the statements. The officer is not checking your balance against a threshold. They are asking whether the money in the account fits your salary, your job and the trip you described on the DS-160.
A modest balance that matches a steady salary reads better than a large balance that appeared last week. If your trip costs more than your savings show, the page allows a sponsor: "If you cannot cover all the costs for your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all costs for your trip."
Are bank statements even required for a US visa interview?
Not as a required item. The required documentation list for a visitor visa is the passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, the application fee receipt and the photo. Financial evidence sits under "additional documentation" that may be requested to establish whether you qualify.
The ustraveldocs guidance used by US posts goes further and names what to bring. It lists "Current proof of income, tax payments, property or business ownership, or assets" and "A letter from your employer detailing your position, salary, how long you have been employed, any authorized vacation, and the business purpose, if any, of your U.S. trip" (ustraveldocs B1/B2 supporting documents).
The same page adds a caution worth taking seriously: "Supporting documents are only one of many factors a consular officer will consider in your interview." Many interviews in practice end without the officer opening a single folder, so the statements are there to back up your answers, not to replace them.
How many months of bank statements should I bring?
Bring enough to show a pattern, not a snapshot. No official page sets a number, so the practical target is a run of statements long enough that salary credits appear in each period and the closing balance does not swing wildly.
Print them from your UAE bank, stamped where the bank offers it, and make sure your name and IBAN appear on every page. If you hold accounts in your home country as well, bring those too. They show assets outside the United States, which speaks to your intent to return.
What to avoid is a single large deposit shortly before the interview with no explanation. Officers see plenty of borrowed money parked for a visa, and an unexplained lump sum invites questions you may not be able to answer convincingly.
What else proves I can afford the trip and will come back?
Ties matter more than balance. The State Department says a 214(b) refusal means you "Did not overcome the presumption of immigrant intent, required by law, by sufficiently demonstrating that you have strong ties to your home country that will compel you to leave the United States at the end of your temporary stay" (travel.state.gov visa denials).
The same page lists examples of ties: "Your job; Your home; and/or Your relationships with family and friends." For a UAE resident, that means a valid residence visa, an employer letter with approved leave dates, a tenancy contract, and evidence of family here or in your home country.
The visitor visa page puts it plainly: "Evidence of your employment and/or your family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country" (travel.state.gov). A bank statement supports that story; it does not tell it on its own.
Can a sponsor's bank statement replace my own?
It can cover the costs, but it cannot cover your ties. The visitor visa page allows a sponsor to pay for "some or all costs for your trip," and it also states that "A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa" (travel.state.gov).
The catch is in the next line of the same page: "Visa applicants must qualify based on their ties abroad/to their home country, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends." So a relative in the United States can fund the trip, but you still need your own employment, residence and family evidence.
If a sponsor is paying, bring their recent bank statements, pay slips and a short letter stating who they are, why they are paying and how much. If they are in the United States, the ustraveldocs list also suggests bringing a photocopy of their proof of status, such as a Green Card or naturalisation certificate (ustraveldocs).
Where do UAE residents interview, and what does it cost?
Check the embassy notice before you plan around Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The US Embassy states that "While the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate in Dubai are open, routine visa processing is not available in the United Arab Emirates at this time" and that further updates will be posted on its site (ae.usembassy.gov).
The same notice says nonimmigrant applicants "should schedule their visa interview appointments at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence or nationality," and it flags Presidential Proclamation 10998, under which the United States is "suspending or limiting entry and visa issuance to nationals of 39 countries" from 1 January 2026. Nationality shapes your options, so settle it before spending money on a fee.
The application fee itself is USD 185 for a B visitor visa and is listed as non-refundable (travel.state.gov fee schedule). If you interview elsewhere, the State Department warns that "in some cases it may be more difficult to demonstrate your qualifications for a visa outside of the country where you live" (travel.state.gov), which is another reason to bring UAE-based evidence in full. Our post on US visa appointment wait times in Dubai and Abu Dhabi covers the appointment side in more detail.
Why do US tourist visa applications get refused on finances?
Refusals on money are refusals on credibility. The officer cannot square the balance with the salary, the trip or the person in front of them, and Section 214(b) makes the applicant carry the burden of proof (travel.state.gov). The avoidable causes we see:
- A sudden deposit. A balance that jumped days before the interview with no source shown.
- Salary that does not match the statement. The employer letter says one figure, the bank credits show another.
- A trip the income cannot support. A four-week itinerary on a salary that leaves nothing at month end, with no sponsor named.
- Relying on a US relative for everything. Funds are covered but the applicant shows no job, lease or family here.
- DS-160 answers that contradict the papers. A different employer, salary or travel purpose than the documents show. See our guide to DS-160 mistakes that delay US visa applications.
- Altered or borrowed documents. The State Department states that willful misrepresentation "may result in the permanent refusal of a visa or denial of entry into the United States" (travel.state.gov).
If you have already been refused, the fee is not returned and you may reapply with a new application and fee (travel.state.gov). Read our post on US visa refusal under 214(b) before you do, because a second attempt with the same file tends to end the same way.
