Germany Visa Appointment Booking from the UAE: What to Know

You cannot simply pick a date for a Germany visa appointment in the UAE. The German Consulate General in Dubai works only through VFS Global, and appointments are released through a waitlist: you register, wait for an email when slots open, and then have 24 hours to book. Register early, prepare the file while you wait, and submit no more than six months before you travel.

What you need for a Germany tourist visa appointment

This is the Consulate's own list for a tourism application, published in its Schengen visa tourism leaflet. Visit and business applications use separate checklists on the same site.

• Application form, completed online in English or German, signed and dated by the applicant (both parents sign for children under 18)
• Passport valid at least three months beyond the requested visa, issued within the last 10 years, with at least two free visa pages, plus any previous passport
• Valid UAE residence permit, also valid at least three months beyond the requested visa
• Two recent biometric photographs, 3.5 x 4.5 cm, not older than six months, white background
• Photocopies: passport data page, signature page, UAE residence permit, previous Schengen visas, and Emirates ID for GCC nationals
• Overseas medical insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 cover and repatriation, valid for the whole visa period and all Schengen countries (credit card insurance is not accepted)
• Travel itinerary: an existing hotel or accommodation booking with full address and a flight reservation
• Letter from your employer or sponsor (NOC) stating position, start date, salary, leave dates and purpose of travel, with a trade licence copy for investors or partners
• Proof of financial means, such as personal bank statements for at least the last three months
• For minors: birth certificate or custody papers, and a letter of consent from both parents with their passport and residence visa copies

Where do you book a Germany visa appointment in the UAE?

You book through VFS Global, not the Consulate. The German Missions in the UAE state that the Consulate "works exclusively with the external service provider VFS Global" and that applications are accepted "by appointment only" at the VFS Global Germany centres in Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

Which centre you use depends on where you live, not where is convenient. Residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates (Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain) apply in Dubai, while residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain apply in Abu Dhabi.

Every application, wherever it is lodged, is decided by the German Consulate General in Dubai. VFS Global only collects the file and forwards it, together with your passport and fee, to the Consulate within one working day.

How does the VFS Global waitlist for Germany appointments work?

You do not see a calendar of open dates. Instead you register on the waitlist at the VFS Global Germany booking page, and the Consulate asks applicants to "register yourself as soon as possible on the waitlist for appointments".

When the visa section releases new slots, you receive an email notification, and that notification is valid for only 24 hours. Miss the window and you are back to waiting, so check your spam folder daily once you have registered.

Slots go out in chronological order of registration, which the Consulate describes as a transparent and fair procedure for handling high demand. The practical lesson is simple: register the day you decide to travel, then prepare the file while you wait.

Pick the right category when you register. Appointments are split into Short Stay (tourism and family visits) and Business, and you may only book under the category matching your trip.

When should you apply for a Germany visa from the UAE?

Apply as early as the rules allow. The German Missions in the UAE say applications can be submitted up to 6 months before the date of travel, and the tourism leaflet puts it as not more than 180 days before the journey.

The EU sets the other end of the window. The European Commission states you must apply at least 15 days before your intended journey, and the normal processing time is 15 days, extendable to 45 days if the file needs closer examination.

Add the waitlist to that and the picture is clear. If you want to travel in peak summer, register on the waitlist in winter and have your file ready to lodge the moment a slot appears.

What happens at the VFS Global appointment?

You attend in person, hand over the complete file and your original passport, give biometrics and pay. The European Commission states that your fingerprints are collected when you submit the application, with exemptions only for specific categories of applicant.

Fees are paid at the counter. The Consulate requires that "all visa fees must be paid upon submission" in cash (AED) only, and the VFS service fee is retained by VFS Global.

Your passport stays with the Consulate for the whole processing period. It can only be withdrawn on a written request from you, and doing so cancels the application, with the passport returned through VFS Global within two working days.

One exception to the appointment rule exists. Spouses of German or EU citizens and parents of minor German or EU citizens who are UAE residents may walk in without a prior appointment.

How much does a Germany visa cost from the UAE?

The government fee is set by the EU. Since 11 June 2024 the Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged six to under 12, and the Consulate collects it in dirhams at its current exchange rate.

VFS Global adds its own charge on top. The VFS Global Germany page for the UAE lists a service charge of AED 146.74 per application for Dubai and Abu Dhabi, non-refundable and inclusive of tax.

The rest of the cost is the supporting paperwork. Schengen-compliant travel insurance from Travl, AXA-issued with the EUR 30,000 medical cover the Consulate requires, starts from AED 30, and a flight reservation with a real PNR from Dummy Ticket 365 costs from USD 13 for two days of validity.

How long does the Germany visa take after the appointment?

Up to 15 days, counted from submission at VFS Global. The Consulate's leaflet says processing "takes up to 15 days" due to legal requirements, and asks applicants to refrain from status inquiries during that time.

The 15 days is a ceiling for a straightforward file, not a guarantee. Under EU rules the period can stretch to 45 days when the Consulate needs to examine the file more closely or asks for more documents, and the Consulate reserves the right to call you for an interview.

Some nationalities take longer. The tourism leaflet warns that special rules apply to holders of passports not recognised by the German authorities, who may be asked to visit the Consulate's visa section in person, and that processing time in such cases varies.

Why do Germany visa applications from the UAE get refused?

Most avoidable refusals come from the file, not from the applicant's profile. The Consulate says plainly that "only complete applications can be accepted" and that missing documents may lead to refusal. These are the causes VisaWadi sees most often.

• Incomplete files. A missing NOC, an old bank statement or a photo older than six months is enough. The main Schengen page repeats that missing documents or information can lead to a rejection.
• Fake bookings. The Consulate states that false or falsified documents, including fake bookings, will lead to refusal and possibly further consequences. Use a verifiable flight reservation with a real PNR and a hotel booking that actually exists.
• Wrong country. Germany must be your main destination, meaning the longest stay. If you apply in Dubai for a trip that is mostly in France, the file is in the wrong queue. Our guide to the main destination rule explains how to decide.
• Non-compliant insurance. Credit card cover is explicitly not accepted, and the policy must cover all Schengen states for the whole visa period. See the minimum cover rules before you buy.
• Weak ties and funds. Three months of bank statements and an employer letter with leave dates and a return-to-work date are what the Consulate lists. A thin or inconsistent version of either invites doubt about your intention to return.
• Wrong appointment category. Booking a business slot for a family holiday, or the reverse, means the file does not match the category you registered under.

If you are refused, you receive the grounds in writing with information on your right to appeal. Note that the Federal Foreign Office has abolished the remonstration procedure from 1 July 2025, so the informal reconsideration route no longer exists and a fresh, corrected application is often the practical next step.
