How Long Can You Stay in the UK on a Visitor Visa?
A UK Standard Visitor visa allows a maximum stay of 6 months per visit. The visa itself may be valid for up to 10 years, but each entry is limited to 6 months as decided by the Border Force officer at the port. You cannot extend a visitor visa once you are in the UK, and overstaying is recorded and will affect future visa applications.

A UK Standard Visitor visa permits a stay of up to 6 months on each visit, as set by UK Visas and Immigration. The visa can be issued with a validity of up to 10 years, meaning you can travel in and out of the UK multiple times, but no single visit can exceed 6 months. UAE residents applying from Dubai or Abu Dhabi should understand exactly how those 6 months are counted and what the rules say about extensions.
What does a UK Standard Visitor visa actually allow?
The Standard Visitor visa is a single visa category that covers tourism, family visits, business meetings, and short courses. It does not give you the right to work, receive public funds, or live in the UK long-term.
When you arrive at a UK port of entry, a Border Force officer decides how long you may stay, up to that 6-month ceiling. In practice, most visitors are granted the full 6 months, but the officer can grant less if your circumstances suggest a shorter stay is more appropriate.
The visa's own validity period, which can be 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years, is separate from the permitted length of stay. A 10-year visa does not mean you can stay for 10 years continuously; it means you can make multiple visits over 10 years, each capped at 6 months.
Can you extend a visitor visa from inside the UK?
No. The UK does not allow visitor visa extensions from inside the country in normal circumstances. According to gov.uk, if you want to stay longer than 6 months you must leave the UK and apply for a different visa category that suits your purpose.
There is a narrow exception for exceptional circumstances beyond your control, such as a serious medical emergency. This is not a standard route and requires strong documented evidence. Do not plan your trip around this possibility.
If you are already in the UK and your situation changes, for example you wish to switch to a student or work visa, you cannot switch in-country from a visitor visa. You must leave and apply from outside the UK.

What happens if you overstay your UK visitor visa?
Overstaying is a serious immigration breach. The UK records overstays, and any future visa application, whether for the UK or many other countries, will ask about immigration history. A refusal on grounds of overstay is very difficult to overcome.
Under UK immigration rules, a person who overstays may face a re-entry ban. The length of the ban depends on how long the overstay lasted and whether you left voluntarily or were removed. This is governed by the UK Immigration Rules published by the Home Office.
If you have overstayed and returned to the UAE, you should take legal advice before making a new UK visa application. VisaWadi can assess your file and advise on timing, but we will always flag if an overstay makes a new application high-risk.
How do UAE residents apply for a UK visitor visa?
UAE residents apply for the Standard Visitor visa through VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The application is submitted online via gov.uk, and then biometrics are enrolled at the VFS centre. Processing from the UAE typically takes several weeks, though priority and super-priority services are sometimes available at an additional fee.
Your nationality matters here. Some nationalities face significantly longer processing times or a higher rate of additional document requests. If your nationality changes the risk profile of your application, VisaWadi will tell you that upfront.
The documents required for a UK visitor visa include your passport, bank statements for the past 3 to 6 months, proof of accommodation, a cover letter explaining your trip, and evidence of ties to the UAE such as your Emirates ID, tenancy agreement, and employment letter. A flight reservation is often included in the file. You can get a verified flight itinerary with a real PNR code from Dummy Ticket 365 from USD 13, without buying a full ticket before your visa is approved.
VisaWadi's United Kingdom visa assistance service covers the full process: document review, file preparation, VFS appointment booking, and tracking your application through to a decision. Packages start from AED 699.
